I have decided that I want to dye my hair blonde and wanted to know which way would be the best to go about it.
First of all I have been dying my hair for over 10 years, and I did managed to get it all the way to a light blonde which I kept for 3 or 4 years, then clever me decided ooh lets try a darker colour and well lets just say I forgot how to get it back to the blonde I loved so much.
I wouldn't describe my hair as a super dark tone. It's about medium brown right now (Having last been dyed 4 months ago with a level 4 nice & easy dye, most of it's faded out now and close to my natural colour) - I have attached a picture of the current colour, however it looks slightly lighter in real life.
I know from previous experience that my hair picks up boxed dye colour really easily and on my virgin roots Superdrug Ash Blonde (Level 10) takes well, giving a natural blonde result.
Now I am doubtful that that colour would take over my current colour without at least pre-lightening it slightly first (although it's tempting to try it on a stand test and see).
What I was thinking of doing is:
Using gainier nutriesse pre-lightener to lighten it up slightly and then (hopefully it doesn't go bright orange) using the Ash Blonde I always used to swear by to get it to a decent light-medium blonde colour.
Do you think this would work?
How would I get it out of the bright orange stage if that happens without totally destroying my hair?
*anyone*
P.S. My hair is in pretty good condition right now. I never use hair straighteners, but I do blow dry it a couple of times a week.
If your hair is bleached already under the darker dye, then you need a colour remover to get the darker dye out, tint wont lift tint.
This will take you back to a lighter base, but will remove all the ash tones the dyes have deposited so will be a more yellowy blonde.
Trying to bleach out brown dye (Garnier pre lightener is bleach) will create orange tones. Pre-lightening and then dyeing straight over with a permanent dye is double processing and not the way to get healthy blonde hair.
Will a colour remover work, even if my hair is back to it's natural colour. It's been a long time since it was dyed and there doesn't appear to be any dye left in it at all (maybe a tiny bit near the ends). I would have thought that would be counter productive myself.
Permanent dyes lighten your hair while they deposit colour. This means that under the dye your hair will be a lighter shade than your natural dye. It's always worth using a colour remover before bleaching as any damage you save yourself is a bonus.
Yes. It might look like your natural colour but it is still artificial pigment. If you put this dye over the Light Ash colour then a colour remover should take you back to that level. It is always best to avoid bleaching permanent dyes out, why go through all the ugly orange stages if you can avoid them? Keeping bleaching to an absolute minimum is always better for the integrity of your hair.
