Hello, the look I want is to have light roots but black length. I'm looking for a "I have natural light brown/dark blonde hair but dyed it black a while ago" look. Kind of like reverse ombre, but not with a long light roots. I don't want to go to a salon and get it done all the time, because who has that kind of money or time? I have been doing my hair for a while, and messing it up doesn't scare me away.
That being said, how can i lighten all of the root of my hair? I first wanted to do a lightening shampoo that was gradual, i thought that would be easy although long. but i've decided i will just dye it and then touch up. It's high maintenance but it's fine with me.
I want to safely dye the roots all around my head up to like, five inches (actually I have no idea how long I want my roots to be yet so don't quote me on that), and do it evenly and believably. Is there an easy way to do this without accidentally bleaching my black length too? I figure just parting it into a thousand sections and measuring equal lengths. I also wondered if there's any videos, pictures, written tutorials on a similar concept that isn't lightening dark roots with bleached hair, since that really isn't the same for me at all.
my hair is >30 inches, so pretty long.
Any and all tips are appreciated. Hope I got this across well.
So what is your hair history now? Is it all dead black? This will make bleaching hard as you'll likely get pale roots and orange further down. If not, is it all virgin?

It's dyed black on the length but my roots are grown out for many inches. My roots are a dull dark brown and virgin, which is the part I want to bleach. I don't want to bleach the black dyed part. If I did go down too far and bleach the black and mess up that way, I could always dye over it. I really just want an effective way to bleach all of my roots with as little mess up as possible. If the colour comes out brassy or orange, I figure that can be fixed with toner or a cool toned darker dye and it's not a big deal? I was also thinking I might use something that will lift a few levels until I got a good light brown. My hair is super susceptible to bleach and dye and works well with it. I never got bad brassy tones before but I also don't want BLONDE either. Just an ashy dark blonde feel.
I want it to look natural when I put up my hair, part my hair, blows in the wind, etc and also be able to repeat the process for growth every so often.
When I look up reverse ombre tutorials and similar concepts all I get is dying the length darker, not any methods to lighten only your roots.
Just a little opinion to add about this, my hair is currently dyed a very dark brown and my natural roots are dark ash blonde (grown out a bit more than I'd like as I'm waiting to start a new job and want fresh dyed hair for that) and I have to say that in bright sunlight it makes me look like my hair is thinning! I'm not trying to put you off your idea, but it may be worth considering keeping the root area quite long (like ear length) to avoid the look as though your hair is thinner at the root. (My ash blonde hair also appears grey against the depth of colour of the rest).
