Last week I put highlights in my light brown hair so that I could work my way up to a nice blonde color for the summer. After I finished the highlights my hair looked great except for some orange-y strips.
I did a bit of research and found that if I got a Wella T14 it would help get rid of the orange tones. When I went to Sally's to pick it up the girl there told me I should go with a darker color so that it wouldn't brighten and make my highlights stick out too much.
Worst advice ever.
She suggested T28 - natural blonde. It didn't have any blue in it, it turned my whole head a weird orange-y blonde and now my hair feels very dry.
Please help! I don't know whether it is too soon to tone it again, I don't want to damage my hair too much but I'm almost too embarrassed to leave the house. Is there a toner I can use that wouldn't damage my hair and fix this orange color?
You can tone with a non damaging direct dye diluted in conditioner. A purple based blue if still orange, or a violet (blue based purple) if more yellow.
Oxidative toners are only designed to be used on hair that is already lightened to the required level, you can't tone orange hair to ash blonde, you need to lighten past the orange stage. Toners are for tweaking the tone within a level.
