Okay so my OH and I are doing my hair tonight :D! It's starting off with 2 bleaches at 40vol and then a toner to even it up and leaving it a few hours (In which we'll do his) and then I'm putting my Fire red and Mandarin orange on it and leaving it for probably the whole night : Can you say all nighter?

Quick question; How do I post pictures? :$

first off. don't do 2x 40vol bleaches in one night! your hair will die! you'd be better off doing a blach bath tonight and another next week.

second, you can leave directions on as long as you like =) cos it's a vegetable dye it does your hair good, the longer you leave it =)

third(ly!) either paste a link into the box where you type, or go into additonal options and you can upload from your comp that way =)

Okay so I'm gingery blonde and my hair is in really bad condition :/ I was told by the shop assistant when I bought my hair dye today to mix it with peroxide. Should I do it? Will it ruin my hair even more?

O.o you didn't do the two 40 vols in one night, did you?

Leave peroxide out of it now.  Just put the dyes in and leave it ... like Pippa said, it's a veggie dye so it works as a deep conditioner.  Red and orange take fine over gingery hair, it shouldn't need any more peroxide at all!

you shouldn't ever add peroxide to directions dye, just for future reference

I did one 40vol and a 20vol and then put the dye on for 6 hours and then deep conditioned and my hair looks and feels amazing! It's softer and bouncier then it was before O: And the colour is soooo nice! Love it!

bleach is only active up to 90 minutes if it's still moist. After 90 minutes it will almost only cause further damage without lightening.

When you apply bleach it opens the cuticles of your hair, creating tiny little barbs on each hair shaft. This allows colours to penetrate the hair. Once the dye is in and you condition then your hair shaft closes the cuticles but it never closes as fully as it was with virgin hair. So each time you bleach you open the cuticles more and more because they never go back fully. If you bleach twice in one night you put a damaging product over damaged hair - not a good plan!

You should always bleach once and then spend a few weeks conditioning your hair so that next time you bleach you're opening the cuticles again from an almost closed position.

With the cuticles fully open on damaged hair the shaft of the hair is much thinner, making it easy to break. If the cuticles are opened too far then it is beyond repair, making a hair cut your only saving grace.

Sorry for the long "science bit" but I'm always amazed at how many people - despite the advice all over this forum and the internet - still try bleaching twice or even three times in short succession. I'm glad your hair worked out ok Tasmin but I'd like to advise anyone else reading this that two bleaches in one night is not the best plan.

This website shows you how each hair is made up and how it looks when it's damaged, maybe that will help explain what I'm saying:
