Hello everyone. I'll try to make this short... A little about me, my natural hair color is dark brown. It's naturally straight. I had virgin hair for about 19 years. When I was 20 I decided I wanted to lighten my hair (light brown) and get some blonde highlights. I had a hard time finding a salon that would do it. I even went to Paul Mitchell and they looked at me in disbelief then told me "Well... Wow your hair is thick and dark. Are you sure you haven't dyed it? We can do it, but it won't come out that exact color..." Many other salons told me the same thing. I finally found a stylist through a friend who told me she could do it. Well she did, but my hair ended up looking brassy. I went to her time after time and the brassy color never went away. So I decided to stop going to her and dye my hair jet black (box color). Yeah, big mistake :-X
I got tired of the black hair and decided to go back to her. Another big mistake. She lifted the color after a few visits. Yesterday she dyed it ashy light brown, but it ended up red-orange instead. I asked her if it will ever look brown and she said "No, this is as light as I can get it. I can do a beautiful red on you though. Or I can give you highlights again. But I can't do brown on you" I was furious and I went to a salon that specializes in coloring to see if they could fix it. They told me no.
My city is pretty well known for girls with brassy hair. There aren't too many good salons here. I just want to know
1. Can the brassiness be removed?
2. How do I find a good hair colorist?
Well, most of us don't go to colourists. We do our own hair, hence it being a hair dye help forum! π
You could firstly try a colour remover. From your spelling if color I assume you're in the US, which means you'll want color oops. This might remove more of the black, which was probably really a very dark brown, which means it contained red and that is probably what is still in your hair now.
If you still have a lot of brassiness you can get a blue dye, mix a small amount of it into cheap white conditioner and leave that in for 5-10 mins. This will help tone the orange to brown. It could look a little darker unfortunately. However, you might have already got it lighter with the colour remover (this should have been the first step when you wanted the black gone).
You also have to bear in mind that very dark hair will go through red and orange stages as it lightens. This isn't because the salons have done a bad job, this is the natural pigment in your hair being revealed. So to get to a light enough colour for cool toned shades you will need to lighten in several stages. The first salon gave you good advice, it is not possible to lift very dark hair to light/cool in one sitting. For a light ash brown you will need to bleach out all the natural orange pigment in your hair first, which will be a long slow process.
