I'm a 7N hair color, but want to go lighter - highlights or whole hair dye?

Hi, my name is Lisa and I have 7N hair color naturally and hazel eyes. I have some grown out (very grown out by like 4 or 5 inches) highlights right now, too, that are about 8N and maybe some 9N highlights in there, too. My hair is long and is about the same color as Lauren Conrad's hair in this attached pic. I really love hair that is more blonde, though, more like the other pic, but I know that comes with more damage to the hair. Should I just keep doing highlights and try to add a lot more highlights to make it more blonde, or should I go all out and dye my whole head and do some highlighting as well? I know there will be maintenance either way, so I'm not too scared of that. I just 1) am not sure if that blonde will look good on me, and 2) am not sure if it will destroy my hair. Was thinking of going with Goldwell products, dyeing with 8N and then highlighting with bleach. If I dye and then bleach, should I wait a few days in between doing those two things? When should I do toner, after the dye or after the highlights are done? Thank you!

I'm not necessarily writing to advise on if you should lighten.  But I have found that toning makes a HUGE difference when it comes to making golder tones look whiter.

I've been using a product called Nirvel ArtX Nutre Color in grey, which is a semi-permanent dye that looks very steely-purple when it comes out of the bottle.  I mix it with white conditioner for the toner to keep the brassiness at bay.  Last weekend, I used a bit too much of the dye and not as much conditioner as normal.  Surprisingly, the toner deepened the blonde just slightly, but after looking at it for a week now, in the bright sunlight, my hair almost looks on the very "white" side of blonde!  And after two washes, it does seem like it's fading and brightening slightly already.

If you lighten it further or not, that might be something to try, some really strong toners which do no damage whatsoever and are fade-able if you use too much.

Just thought I'd share my experience!

Thank you! That's a really good point, I didn't even think of that. It could be worth trying to tone before I go all out with bleach. Thanks!

If you do go ahead with highlighting, you can have the highlights and the 8N at the same time - most hairdressers should be able to do this, avoiding you extra cost and double processing , and avoiding them extra time.

Thanks, I didn't know they could do that. That's good to know. Maybe spare the hair some damage. πŸ™‚

Bleaching your whole head when you have highlights woven in is messy business. I had that done and I recently added a few lowlights and am just going back to highlights. I started off with darker blonde highlights when I had virgin hair and you can definitely get more and heavier bleach foils to make your hair a lot blonder. I suggest that.
