How to dye hair red, with a white streak.

It sounds pretty straight forward but I have no idea how to go about this.  *stars* I've dyed my hair bright red many times before but this time I'd like to have a few white streaks. My hair atm is dark brown regrowth, and from about my eyes down it's faded, brown and very light brown tips, from the last time I had dyed my hair blood red, which was about a year ago. Which is fine.

What I'd like to know is what's the best way to go about dying my hair this time. Do I dye all my hair red, wait a week, then add in the white streak? Or should I wrap up the parts I want white, dye the rest of my hair red, then Bleach those untouched bits white. Or do I bleach the streaks first, then cover them up and dye the rest red.

I guess I'm mainly worried about the streak getting colored by the red hair bleeding. I'm also unsure how to go about getting the streak white. I was planning on buying a kit for it. I've also never had to take care of a white streak so, I'm lost there also XD.

To dye my hair red I'm going with 10vol and 30vol Developer and vitality fascinelle red (Never used this brand before so wish me luck o.o). I usually use Majicontrast Rouge but sadly my local hair dresser no longer stocks it and I can't find it anywhere around where I live.

*anyone* Any advice would be awesome!  *hugs*

So, all your hair was dyed red earlier? If that's the case, getting white in it now will be virtually impossible. Especially if over the top of that you've dyed it other colours since. Anything that was dyed red will have some orange staining under the light brown. Anything dyed just brown will still likely have some brown staining, but probably less.

If you're determined to try though, firstly, keep in mind it's not likely to happen, so have a second plan in mind. Secondly, getting white hair is a slooooooow process in the best of circumstances, unless you want to fry your hair. On hair dyed it's doubly difficult.

So, to start, you need to work out sections you want white. Then use a colour remover on those parts so you can see what staining you might have. You do NOT want to just reach for the bleach or dye it red then try and bleach it. You need to get rid of as much dye as possible before doing anything.

Though, you should really do that to all your hair so the red dye has a chance of working better.

I also wouldn't use a permanent red. They are actually less permanent than the semi dyes. They are permanent,  but they fade faster than the semis and end up being duller faster and then topping them up just adds more and more damage. Use a direct dye (Special Effects, MAnic Panic etc) and you can top up whenever with no damage.

Stopping red bleeding into white is very hard, it's likely to turn pink just rinsing the dye out. The only way to stop it would be to put petroleum jelly on the white bits, that's tricky to get out. It's just the way red is. The pigments are strong and tend to get everywhere.

Honestly, the more I think about it, if you're not used to multicoloured hair, white with any strong colour is about the worst you can start with! And getting white after having red is incredibly hard. White is just hard, I've never managed it apart from when my hair is extremely damaged.

My advice, I'm really sorry about this... come up with a different plan!

I agree with Janine, if your going red then a semi is the way to go because you need to top up more often and your going to want it vibrant, and to save you the headache of achieving the white streaks, just go to your local wig shop or anywhere that sells hair and get a white wig or white hair pieces and just clip them in your hair.
White is extremely hard to get and most people never get there, wicked pixie has a post about it having to do with your melanin distribution. Plus trying to keep the white and red separate is going to be near impossible (that is if you can even achieve white). Every time you wash your hair its going to fade into the white and you'll end up with pinky orange streaks.
I would save yourself the headache and buy white hair that can be clipped in, and for that matter you can buy any color hair and switch it up when you want to and you don't have to worry about doing any extra processes on your hair.

I agree, keeping white streaks in red hair would be really difficult, even if you masked it off when you washed it the first time you got caught in the rain it'd be pink! (Just like my poor light grey fake fur coat!), I genuinely just got rid of all my light coloured clothes when my hair was red coz of the rub off!

Id go with white clip in extensions too, keeping red from bleeding, even if you could achieve the white streaks, will be so hard
