Horribly wrong, orange hair

I have attached a photo of my latest try to light up my roots. I have saloon products, 9%. But as you can see it turned orange. I only had it in for about 10 minutes because my hair is so damaged so I  was afraid to leave it in longer  even if I only tried to just bleach the roots.  What do I do now? πŸ™

When lightening hair it goes through several stages as the pigments are removed; Brown, red, orange, gold, yellow and then blonde (depending on your natural hair colour you might not go through all of the stages) you have only lightened your hair as far as orange here, you would need to lighten it further to get to blonde.

There is lots of information in the bleaching and lightening section about how to lighten as safely as possible, however you should not bleach your hair more than once in fast succession, particularly if you feel it is already damaged, so you will need to be patient.

That depends on your hair, as I mentioned above everyones hair goes through the stages slightly differently (mine for instance is very ash so it doesn't go through red or orange but it sticks at yellow for a while. You need to either do a strand test and time it, or keep checking the colour when the bleach mixture is on by scraping a little bit off and looking at it then reapplying it and leaving it a little longer if it isn't the right colour yet.

The general rule we tend to follow on here is to wait a month between bleaching and a week between bleach baths, and try not to overlap the bleach onto the lengths where they are already very light. This length of time is so that any damage caused by the bleach has time to show up so you know what you are working with. Obviously you can assess your own hair and do what you think is best, but if you feel it may be damaged it's worth remembering that the damage may not be fully showing yet and it could get worse.

Also - it has just occurred to me that you mentioned that you used 9% developer, but you didn't mention what product you used (I was assuming you used a bleach) did you use a blonde dye or a bleach? You need a good quality bleach really, some of them have ingredients that counteract brassiness. Either way, if you only left it on 10 mins it won't have been long enough anyway, but if it was a blonde dye it could also be that it doesn't give enough lift for the effect you want.

You could try and tone it too, though it may not work if the orange is too dark - you could try using small amount of a blue direct dye mixed into some white conditioner and see if that helps?

It doesn't seem to be showing up your photo, but glad to hear it went well! Next time you need to do it just remember to leave it on long enough to go through past the orange and yellow stages, but try not to overlap where you have already bleached it so that you don't damage it too much!
