Help me with my options...one scared poorly lady...

Can you guys help me? Yesterday I went to the hairdresser to get my roots bleached. I have had issues with major allergies to bleach before (L'oreal infinie platine) and had found the ammonia free Blondor by Wella was okay for me, so they decided to use that on my dark brown hair. When it was washed off, it was particularly yellow, and without asking me, the hairdressers plonked infinie on my freshly washed wet hair. Within minutes I was burning up and I collapsed, having had an allergic reaction. I am now left with this awful yellow blonde and i'm too scared to go and get my hair bleached up because it was so scary.

I'm attaching a picture. My hair is a mid blue, although not a green base. I don't want to go too dark and I don't really want to put a purple on there. What colour options do I have that will cover the yellow? Ultimately i'd like to go peach again but I guess peach and blue would look awful so i'm a bit lost as to what to do....what would happen if I tried to go orange over blue? The second picture is what the majority of my hair is coloured

Orange over blue = mud sadly. But just put a very diluted pink over the yellowy blonde and you'll get a peachy pink. You might get a little transitional purple, but only a little if you apply it carefully and just on the blonde. Peach and blue can look very pretty.

Or you could use a slightly deeper blue and have an ombre affect, that would look pretty. It's really not that bad of a yellow and could be toned to a degree with purple shampoo. It won't go white, but it will take out some of the harsher yellow making it easier to work with.

Ahhh I thought it might come out something near to grotesque! in my possession I have some pink, some dark purple (but i'm loathed to go purple as it always feels a bit 'camden'), dark blue and some pravana vivid grey. I think i'll do what you say and try and take some of the yellow out first, but after I stop feeling so poorly. It was rather scary to say the least! If I went to the peachy colour, would that prevent me from going purple or blue if it's hateful??

Well, it will be harder to get straight blue, but purple, no problem. Remember though, you don't have to go full purple. I don't like purple on me much, but I find it nice mixed with pink and/or blue ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you feel better soon! I can imagine it was incredibly scary.

Thank you! I do have a toner by Bleach London but i'm terrified to use it because of what happened at the hairdressers. I've never felt so hot in my entire life, thought I was going to explode! I love your hair btw. What about pravana grey? Is that okay over yellow or not?

Thank you so much for your kind help btw. I'm feeling rather ugly and icky looking like this...

If you're worried about a reaction, do a skin test. You can look up how to do them online, I'm not sure of the best practice at the moment. You used to just put a blob of the mixed dye (or obviously just the dye if it was a direct dye) on the inside of the elbow, leave to dry and leave it uncovered for at least 24 hours. Any itching or redness is what you're looking for.

I'm not sure about pravana grey, I've not used it, I think the yellow might be just slightly too yellow though. Toned it might be ok.

If the bleach London toner is one you mix with peroxide I'd avoid using it until your body is completely back to normal. I'd still do a skin test first. I'd actually suggest that for any dye you want to use from now on.

Truth is, we should all be doing skin tests every single time we dye our hair as we can become allergic at any time. I am rather disturbed by how few salons seem to do it now. I guess it's too much trouble to ask a customer to come in 24-48 hours before an appointment?

It really all depends on what you're allergic to as well, but it's also possible you'll now have a heightened sensitivity to other things as well, so just be careful and as I said before, don't test anything for at least a couple of days. If it's peroxide or ammonia you're having a reaction to (not sure how likely either is) you should find any direct dyes would be absolutely fine as they, of course, contain neither.

Edit to add - Just looked up the bleach london toner, don't use it. It's a demi permanent so mixes with peroxide. Save it for later and test it when you're definitely not so venerable. You'd be better off with a heavily diluted purple dye or a silver shampoo.

Fantastic! Thank you so much for your help. I am kind of going out of my mind with worry about what to do and whether to risk things. I had actually skin tested for the other bleach they used, and was fine, it was just they for some reason used one they KNEW I was allergic to without even telling me. Ridiculous behaviour.

I shall maybe try and little bit of pink for this week, just to get me through without looking absolutely terrible, then try the bleach london stuff when i'm less poorly, as I still ache all over and feel very unstable physically. The only thing I can imagine is that i'm allergic to ammonia, given that I wasn't allergic to the ammonia free bleach. The worst thing was how the hairdressers treated me. Actually like I was a pain in the backside for collapsing. I felt so scared!

Until you actually test things individually, you'd probably need to go to a specialist for that, you can't really conclude an allergy to a specific thing. It could be that there was another ingredient that was in one and not the other. It's definitely possible though.

Personally, I really don't like toners you have to mix with peroxide. Especially white or silver toners. You can get as good, or even better, result from using direct dyes. The plus of that is less likely to have a reaction and NO extra damage. If I were you, I'd return or sell on the toner you have.

That is a shame the hairdressers reacted like that. It's at best unprofessional and horrible customer service. At worst, could be deadly.

Well today i've decided to slap on some silver blonde toner from that new brand Colour Freedom (whoever they are!) to see what kind of base I can get to work with. It's just basically conditioner with some direct dyes in so I think it should be okay. Then hopefully I can get myself to a nice lilac tone, or proper grey. I finally feel human again so thats something, and i'm not reacting to this dye at all, apart from feeling soothed because my head was so itchy!

I'm so upset with how those hairdressers reacted, it wasn't fair, they actually shouted at me to pay when I was barely able to keep standing, which I did, and they didn't return the change because I just lurched out to try and get some help. What if I hadn't taken an antihistamine before I went? I'd  have dropped dead before they gave a toss. Rush in wandsworth SUCKS.

Wandsworth in the UK? (I know there's a few Americans etc here) I used to work opposite that one (had an icelands like 2 shops down in the shopping center) they were incredibly rude the one and only time I went in to enquire about having my hair cut and coloured so I never went back. Sounds like I had a lucky escape if its the same one.

I think you will need a better toner. I tried that one on pretty white hair, and it did absolutely nothing (except make my hair shiny)

Yes thats the one! Absolutely AWFUL. The icelands has gone now and been replaced with a New Look, but yes you did. Let me tell you, I once asked for a haircut that looked like an anime character type thing, so a bit like a jagged bob. She combed my hair, dry, staight down and just cut my hair in a zig zag and said 'there we go!'. It took three minutes and looked HORRENDOUS.

I've been to their head office and they are going to look after my hair for free until it grows back. It's so destroyed it's barely an inch long over my crowd and parting area. She let me stand there begging to leave whilst I could feel myself losing consciousness. I was swollen, terrified and desperate for help. Its made me so scared to ever dye my hair again!
