Hi all πŸ™‚
Superdrug have stopped selling the bleach kit I used to use so I'm having to look elsewhere to buy bleach.
I managed to borrow a work colleagues Sally's card so I was hoping to buy it this weekend from there.
I have no idea on bleach so please help!!

I need my hair to go very light and my natural hair is a light brown colour.
I've heard a 12% bleach is pretty normal for lighter hair?

Sorry I'm not clued up πŸ™ help!

Stay well away from the 12%/40 vol! That's super strong and not only is bad for the hair, it's bad for the scalp. Most you should need is 20 vol. I have very dark brown hair, but 20vol is enough to get me to pale yellow, not quite pale enough for white and light pastels (though colours fade to pastels fine) but it's plenty light enough for anything darker than a mid pink, blue, turquoise, almost anything that's not super pale.

So it's a 8% peroxide (also known as 20 vol), though I think 6% would even be fine. Then you want a good quality bleach powder. Can't say any I've ever used from Sally's has been great. I prefer to buy from Amazon and get Indola blue bleach, but other people have other favourites.

Yes, what you've been using probably had a 30 or 40 vol peroxide in the kits. All that does is work faster, it's just not needed, especially as it's hot right now. The hotter it is, the faster bleach works. Where ever you heard 12% is normal for lighter hair... Do not trust them!!

Sallys stock Wella Blondor which is a great bleach. When you have a really good professional quality bleach you can get just as much lift with a much lower vol peroxide which cuts down on the damage. So 20 should be fine, it works much better/quicker than regular drugstore bleach. The first time i use Blondor, it was on my daughters level 6/7 dark blonde/light brown and it went platinum almost instantly with 20 vol. For root touch ups we dropped to a 10 vol, which gave me more time to get the product on.

I'll definitely stick to the lower percentage now then! Wow glad I asked before I went and bought stuff! Thanks guys.a
My hair is only slightly damaged due to straightener use so hopefully lower percentage will help to not damage anymore.
What kind of bleach powder do I need? I've seen blue and white powder? I don't know if they have a difference?
Also I've seen people using coconut oil for something when bleaching? What's it for and do I need it?
I've been using store bought products for so long I want to treat my hair to some good stuff now πŸ™‚

I've not been to a Sally's for a long time, so I am out of touch with what they stock now πŸ™‚ I just get everything online.

You can use blue or white. I use blue... Just because I do! The blue is supposed to give a head start on toning out yellow and orange tones, but I'm not really sure it does.

Coconut oil is great to use. Make sure its unrefined 100% virgin coconut oil. You don't have to spend a lot of money on it. You can get it in local Asian food shops, corner shops often have it in fact. Failing that, a lot of tescos and sainsburys are stocking it now with the other cooking oils. Don't bother with anything sold specifically for hair. It helps the hair from loosing proteins while bleaching. Scoop out a blob and warm it in your hands, or even in a bowl for a few seconds and just smooth it through your hair at least an hour before you are going to bleach, but overnight would be even better. Then just apply the bleach, over it, as normal. Do make sure you're working in a warm room though, you need to keep it from hardening with cold.

If I was choosing a bleach from Sallys i would either get the Wella Blondor cream, (they also do a powder but I have only tried the cream) or the Schwarzkopf BlondMe powder. You don't need to worry about the colour with these brands, there isn't a choice.

I just use generic developer with whatever bleach, I have never seen any difference in results. The Blondor cream is very thick when mixed with regular cream developer, I did wonder if the specific developer would be thinner.
