Help
I've had a bad experience in a salon last wee where I unexpectedly had a full head of bleached highlights, even though I asked for my already over highlighted hair to be toned down and made more natural. She left the bleach on for an hour and didn't check it once. My hair is now so damaged - any advice on products I can use to help my hair. Also how do I go by rectifying this, I would like to be darker the bronde look but is this even possible now I've had a full head of bleached highlights do I have to wait a bit before seeing someone to sort my hair out? Thanks in advance x
Ouch, yeah, that's not really toned down is it? I don't think it looks bad, for what it's worth, but no, it isn't subtle. The root area definitely isn't the best.
I would start off by getting some aphogee two step treatment to help with the condition. Don't use it more than once every 6 weeks though as it will cause further damage if you over use it.
What country are you in? I don't know too much about blonde toners unfortunately, and I only know about ones in the UK at that. But you need to use something without peroxide and semi permanent blonde toners should help to tone down the bright blonde. If you want it to be more like low lights in the blonde, you can apply them like highlights, but it won't be all that easy on your own. They also won't last too long. You'll be better off just toning all of the blonde. You'll get brighter parts and darker parts though, as you have now as these dyes/toners are translucent.
I'd call and have it redone.... by someone else like the owner or manager (assuming they're also a stylist). It doesn't look professional at all. Luckily there's the top section that falls over that line. I know you weren't exactly looking for this type of advice but you have a right to have it redone. Time is key- you've got to let them know asap. I've had a bad experience where it was essentially the opposite and my hair was barely changed when I wanted it lightened.
Edited to add: they should also be able to do a hardcore conditioning treatment- maybe even olaplex. Don't be afraid to call- they should make it right!
There's some info at the bottom of this thread about mixing Adore browns and diluting them heavily to tone blonde darker.

I agree that you should complain to the hairdressers and at least as for a complimentary conditioning treatment (personally I don't think I'd trust them to do a colour correction as they would probably want to use something with peroxide and you'll end up with awful condition). That is assuming you paid them when they did this in the first place, I have to say I wouldn't have paid for what they've done!

Yeah, that was my thought. I know we should give salons a chance to correct a mistake, but trust is an issue.
Exactly, people make mistakes but giving someone the opportunity to mess something up further probably isn't worth the risk! If you do decide to let them do a correction you need to ask them exactly what type of colour products they are planning to use. If you can already feel damage you don't want anything stronger than a direct dye/ wash in wash out product - nothing that is mixed with developer at all (even 'deposit only' or 'semi permanent' can mean they have to mix it with peroxide)
If it were me I would call up the salon and tell them what happened and that its not what you wanted and then tell them what you do want, and be very specific. I would ask to come in just for a consultation so you can physically see the products they want to use and get an idea of their attitude because if they act like this is a waste of time or they are not fully apologetic then I would walk right out of the salon. You should be able to tell from their demeanor if they are being sincere or not. Then if you feel 100% comfortable then I would schedule an appt for the fix and double check all the products they put on your head on the day of the correction. But if you go in and they act like jerks then I would try and do a fix yourself. I would try diluting a semi permanent to get your desired color, I think that is your safest bet and even if it goes too dark it will lighten up with each wash.
To be clear- I wasn't suggesting she let the same person touch her again as they are obviously not competent. I went to a salon with great reviews & photos but got a newer chick that didn't do what I asked and was able to have it fixed by the owner who had a lot of experience. I have no idea what type of place she went to but her going back doesn't necessarily equal certain death 🙂
Oh no that's not what I meant, I just like to go over prepared and a little on the crazy protective side to ensure nothing goes wrong. This place could very well say come on in and we will have the master colorist fix it free of charge, but that's only in a perfect world, so I always like to be super nit picky and that's also probably why I never go to a salon, because I am too picky and overly critical, lol.
I understood what you meant Heatherbee 🙂 I just tend to judge a salon on the employee I go to! If they mess up, I lack trust in the place. Unfair? Probably!
I don't think that's unfair. If they take pride in their salon they should make sure they don't hire people that would let clients walk out with disastrous hair. If you're getting a junior or a trainee you should be made well aware of the fact and offered a reduced rate and that person should be overseen. I don't think its fair to expect a client to be a hair expert capable of knowing when things aren't being done correctly when they walk into a salon! Knowing what I know now I would have stopped the girl who messed up my hair at the first hurdle. She had no idea and took the absolute mick accepting the job when I explained what I wanted over the phone even "pretending" to know how to use Olaplex (she didn't, she started googling when I was there and was hugely conflustered, ended up not using it.) I have come to realise that, with my local salon (sadly I live in the sticks) they will always give you a junior unless you specifically ask for someone well trained. Sadly learned the hard way after a disastrous hair cut and a subsequent disastrous dye job that will take a year to grow out. When I complained about the hair cut and went back in to have it rectified I was given a senior hairdresser who knew her stuff. I've simply condemned the whole salon in my head now, if they don't care enough about their clients to ensure that only the most competant hairdressers are let loose on their client's hair then they don't deserve our business.
this is my email to the salon and their response below ....
I wasn't going to get in contact and I apologise now for not coming back to you sooner as it has been a week since my appointment with you, but felt I should say something.
When I approached the salon via FB message, I asked whether my already over highlighted hair could be toned down and made more natural. Which I was told the salon could do. I also asked whether a toner would help after the highlights and Kelly agreed that this would help and confirmed there was an offer for full head highlights for £45 and that toner was included in the price. I agreed to this as it was a fab offer and I also asked to have the Olaplex treatment as an extra for £20 making the total £65 which is what I paid on the day.
I therefore expected that the highlights would be made up of a couple of colours to make my colour more natural looking.
However, I noticed part way through the appointment you were in fact doing a full head of bleached highlights. At no point was bleach bought up in my consultation with you at the start, if it had been I would of said no as I assumed it would be colours put through as I wanted to tone down my hair not make it brighter than it was.
I totally understand that bleach is probably the cheaper option for salons to using colours especially as you were already reducing your price but I would of gladly paid extra to not have bleach. Maybe this is something you could state to clients in your offers so they have the option.
I also noticed that the bleach was left on my hair for an hour, during which time nobody checked my hair to see how it was processing (my hair processes colour very quickly). The bleach together with being left on so long has really damaged my hair. I understand and expect a certain amount of dryness after highlighting but especially since I had also asked for the Olaplex treatment as an extra I didn't notice any difference to the condition and I even wonder if I had Olaplex put on at all as I can't think where in the process this was done as no one mentioned it during the appointment. Although I did pay the £65 so assume i did have it!
I also notice that if I pull my hair back (which being a busy mum I tend to do a lot) there are patches of where the bleach hasn't gone to the root or the foils have slipped (I'm not sure what's happened or why it's happened) and it doesn't look very good. I've attached some photos I took on the Monday after my appointment to show you what's happened to that section of my hair. I expect root showing a couple of weeks down the line but not two days after a colour.
I'm not looking to make complaint and do not expect anything but felt you should know, as I won't be returning unfortunately.
I was impressed by the salon and how friendly everyone was but disappointed with the colour and the texture of my hair after the appointment.
Looking again at your prices, I notice that you charge £65 for full head bleach and toner and thinking about it now I wonder if in fact this is what I paid for and not full head highlights and Olaplex treatment. I'm not sure why my original message to the salon was not fully relayed to you or wasn't checked properly.
Unfortunately I deleted my message to the salon requesting my appointment, you may still have this but I'm sure I did ask for my highlights to be toned down and I was told that your offer was running for full head highlights and toner was included in that price and that I did agree to paying the £20 treatment on top. Which I'm still not sure I actually had.
I hope if nothing else, my feedback helps future clients.
Regards
Salons response
Hello Sam,
I'm unable to send a message via my hair page unless I have received one previously, so I hope you don't mind me messaging you via my personal page.
Sorry to hear you are unhappy with the service provided by myself. However, in reference to your colour, you did not mention anything apart from the toner to knock out the yellow/brassy tones that were running through your hair. Also, when I asked how you felt about the colour after cutting you said it "looked so much better" and was happy with the colour so unfortunately I did not think to suggest dropping you a little deeper. However, I'm more than happy to foil through some darker blondes if you so wish.
On a side note, the bleach that I used contained olaplex hence the reason that it was left on for the 50 minutes, and it was only placed on the roots and every now and then dragged through to the mid length when I came across the previous foiling which was a darker/muddy blonde which had faded completely from the ends which is why you also had those slightly more brassy shadows running throughout. So the only product that touched your ends would have been the toner, which is colour mixed with the lowest peroxide only suitable for toning as it cannot lift. So the bottom 3inches of your ends were not lifted at all, only toned to remove the yellow that was present.
When your hair was washed part 2 of the olaplex was left on for 10 minutes, after the toner had taken and rinsed off. However, I cannot control how much olaplex fixes your hair, unfortunately it's not just a one treatment fix, if your hair has been over coloured during the past, the olaplex has to repair a lot more throughout the hairs cortex in order to build the strength of your hair back up.
I'm really sorry with the colour bleeding, it would've solely been down the fact that I placed too much product within some of the foils and as it developed would've seeped out in the areas it has.
I appreciate your feedback.
Regards,
Needless to say I won't be going back for a correction!
OK, so I think some of it is down to either her not reading your original message properly, or not understanding what you wanted at least, but did she not sit you down when you first arrived and assess the colour and condition of your hair and discuss what you were hoping to achieve from the process? I would hope that would be the first thing every stylist would do. Either way there has clearly been a misunderstanding, but the last statement of being sorry that it leaked but it being solely down to her putting too much product on... this made me furious! Yes it is down to her putting too much damn product on so why is she not offering to fix it or even really taking ownership that she messed up?! ( I know that she mentions earlier in the message that she could do you some darker foils, but she makes this sound like it would be for your preference that she thinks you didn't mention, not to fix the part that she made a mess of!)
Frankly she doesn't sound like she could care less, I would just look at fixing it yourself with Adore or something.
(Heatherbee I knew what you meant too, I just meant that salons usually want to use tints or toners that use a developer and in this case could make her hair more damaged)
Good idea emailing first before wasting your time going into the salon. I was worried about a response like this, and that's why I always urge people to be very cautious when going back to a salon and wanting a correction. Its like sending your food back in a restaurant, everybody makes that joke that they will spit in your food. Its kind of the same thing, the second you challenge someone's work they get defensive and that's what this lady did and its sad that she can't take constructive criticism better, I have a feeling she will have a short career, if she does not change her ways. I hope you are able to fix your hair, the ladies on here are top notch!
