Good Quality Bleach?

Hi there, so in my quest for great dyed hair, I took your advice and bought bleach powder and peroxide instead of those bleach box kits. But my question is, how do I know if what I bought is good quality bleach? Unfortunately here in South Africa, we don't have beauty supply shops like Sallys etc and unless you are a trained and licensed hair dresser, it is very difficult to buy those sorts of products. I was able to find a company that delivered salon products to the public but as there is no name on the bleach powder, I have no idea if its any good or not. Its a violet bleach powder so I don't know if that will also have an effect or if bleach is bleach regardless of its colour. What do you think?

So ultimately, what makes one bleach powder better than another?

What should I be looking for when doing a strand test? I bought 20vol peroxide and plan on using it in a bleach bath but just want to know what I should be looking out for. Any advice regarding using a new bleach would also be helpful. I do plan on doing a strand test and debating if an allergy test is also necessary?

Thanks so much for all your help.

Unfortunately, it's really just brand recognition in the case of knowing which is a good bleach. From some you get a lot of damage and not much lift. In others you get lots of lift and hopefully less damage. I'm really not a fan of going with brands etc, but sometimes it's useful and this is one of them.

What is the outcome you actually want? What is your hair like now? The. We can help more on what you should be looking for.

Allergy tests don't seem to be so important when bleaching. I've never been sure why that is, but I've always assumed it's less ingredients that are known for extreme reactions (like PPD in some hair dyes). If you're nervous though, you could do one. It will likely burn a bit though, it's just what bleach does. You're also not really supposed to use it directly on the skin/scalp, so that could be another reason why strand tests aren't done for it normally.

Currently my hair is brown to blond-ish ombre. Will try and upload a photo. It goes from light brown to light blonde near the ends. I am trying to go platinum / white all over.

Before this, I had spent a year growing out my previous ombre which was done on another year of growing out old brown box dye. Then I got a demi-permanent dark brown put on about five six months ago but only in chunks. I used a box kit to do an at home ombre about 6 weeks ago which worked really well. Brand is called "Renew". I did a colourb4 after that and it worked wonderfully removing all the old hair dye. I then did a bleach bath about a week ago that raised my hair another couple of levels. I used coconut oil before the bleach bath and my hair doesn't seem to be damaged too badly.

My hair now is in a fairly good condition. I never heat style my hair and always let it air dry. It doesn't feel stretchy or "chewing-gummy" or anything like that. I've been doing coconut oil treatments and deep conditioning treatments on it. I checked the condition last week before the beach bath after clarifying and letting it airdry without conditioner and it was a little bit dry but nothing was breaking off or felt damaged.

Since this is essentially a no-name bleach, I am just wondering what I should be on the lookout for when I use it. Should I check it every five minutes?

Also, since my hair is rather multitonal at the moment, can you spot bleach bath parts to try and get a more even bleach? The top part of my hair is several shades darker than the tips and I want to try and avoid over processing the bottom if I can help it.

I know white is a difficult colour to achieve and I am willing to take it as slow as necessary. Id rather have longish hair not quite the right colour than fry all my hair off and have it white. Just being cautious thats all.
