Going Rogue

Hello lovely ladies. I was in here about a month ago asking if you thought I could touch up my roots myself since I am moving across country and will be living an hour+ away from city salons. I have never colored my hair and you offered some awesome tips to get me started.

Since then, I have learned a lot more about dying hair, the science behind what actually happens when you combine ammonia and peroxide *puzz*, as well as some of the color theory behind coloring hair (which I find the most fascinating part of this whole process!).

Anyway, I had mentioned in my previous post that the Koleston Perfect formula my stylist gave me wasn’t a 100% true match, so I decided to go rogue to try to find my own color formula.

Long story short, I discovered a Wella line at Sally’s called Color Charm (I think it is called Color Perfect in other parts of the world). I have been combining colors and swatching hidden areas of my hair and believe I have found a match that is spot on.

The color I have created is probably about a shade darker than the shade my stylist was using. The top of my head and down to my ears were the only places my stylist would do root touch-ups, so now there is about a 4 inch section between the 1” fresh growth at my roots and the longest part of my hair (down to my waist) that is somewhat brighter than my natural color.

So…my question is…is it possible to dye over those other 4 inches when I go to dye my roots with the new formula I created? I would like for all my color to be consistent and look natural. Since those 4 inches were already processed with 20 developer and a lighter shade two months ago, I just don’t know if I can safely and effectively dye them again a shade darker (the tone is also different – she had me in warm tones and through my swatching I have discovered a mix of neutral and gold are a closer match to my natural color).

Can’t wait to post my pics on here! Having the confidence to do my own roots has eased so much anxiety for me.  😀

If your hair is in good condition then I dont see why not. It has been a couple of months since you last dyed it. I would suggest leaving it on for less time than the roots or using a weaker developer as it has been previously dyed. Just be very careful when dying and do protect it and condition it well after.

You should be ok, even of she overlapped a bit each time it shouldn't be too processed in those areas, does the condition feel ok? You might find the colour doesn't look exactly the same over that bit, but it should look closer than it does now.
There's always the option of using a colour remover if you are not sure the colour will cover it. I use Wella Koleston Perfect which I think could be the UK name for that brand and it is really good.
Glad you have got the colouring 'bug'! Fun isn't it?
