Going back to natural colour

When I first started to get little greys in my fringe, I started dyeing my hair.  I used Daniel Field Water Colours.  It doesn't have ammonia or peroxide in it - not sure how it works but it's permanent anyway.

Problem was, I'd gone darker than my natural colour so I had to keep it up.

Then I decided that trying to keep on top of the grey roots coming in (why are they right on the bit of fringe that's seen?), I'd get some highlights, figuring that was an easier (and longer) way to keep the greys less visible.

Then I got fed up with the highlights (I could never get the shade of blonde I wanted), so back to the Daniel Field dye to cover them up.  I wasn't getting the coverage I wanted with that, so I went with Superdrug's own semi permanent - I went for Rich Chestnut which I think again is a lot darker than my natural colour but it's a really gorgeous colour.

I'm having to do my roots every 4 weeks minimum and they're really obvious because my colour is so dark so that's a nightmare.

I have no idea what my natural colour is nowadays - it used to be a dark blonde/light brown and the little baby curls at the back of my neck (that I've obviously missed when I've dyed it) are a nice sort of golden blonde/light golden brown colour.

After years of dyeing it too dark, would a colour remover work - especially when it's a mixture of permanent and semi permanent dyes?  My hair is prone to being dry anyway - would a colour remover wreck it even more?  I read that it can dry your hair out - is that permanent?

Should do, but there's never a full guarantee. It's not going to take you to your natural colour though. your natural colour will have been lightened by the permanent dyes and you could also have some staining.

Use a good conditioner afterwards and you should be fine.

Thanks.  The permanent dyes didn't have any peroxide or ammonia in them - they're water based and won't lighten your hair - I've no idea how they work.  The only thing that might have changed the colour is the semi which has a developer?

I'm really nervous about doing it but if my hair is as light as I think it is, it should make hiding the greys easier.

A semi that has peroxide is really a demi. It's annoying that they call them semi's now, makes it very confusing. Yes, that could have lightened it, but not as much. Are you sure there was no peroxide in the permanent ones? I've only ever seen no ammonia as far as I'm aware... I could be wrong.

But whatever, it's not likely you'll get your actual natural colour, but it should remove the majority of colour, if not all.

It's this stuff I was originally using

http://www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk/natural-hair-colour/

This is the ingredients - it contains sodium perborate instead of hydrogen peroxide apparently

http://www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk/daniel-field-colouring-faqs/#11

I do love the colour it is just now but as I said, it's having to be done every 4 weeks which is a pain.

I'm dreading trying to remove the colour - I might get a massive shock at the amount of grey - I could end up making an emergency trip to Superdrug wearing a hat!!! LOL

I just had a super quick look, and i think but might be wrong, that when mixed with water sodium perborate becomes peroxide. I need to confirm that though.

ETA found this, but no idea who the author is so can't vouch for how much truth is in it http://www.makeuptalk.com/t/29549/robert-craig-hair-color
