Hi everyone, my name's Rhianna! I've been wanting to bleach my hair for a while, in order to be able to dye it pastel colours. Naturally, I'm a dark blonde (golden blonde in the summer, dark blonde in the winter), which is just about light enough for some colours, but too dark for pastels. I tried dying my hair a lilac, but it didn't take, and left me with a dirty-purple looking colour. So, I ordered the Stargazer bleach and peroxide kit, as well as the La Riche Directions toner, and they have just arrived today.
A bit of background information, to explain my hair situation. When I was 11, I stupidly make the mistake of dying my hair brown. At the time, I loved it, but it just proved to be a pain. Shortly after, I dyed it a cherry red. It lasted for a while, before fading to a ginger colour. I lived with this colour for a while, before deciding to use a box lightening dye when I was 14. This made my hair a yellow shade, and back then I was oblivious to the use of toners, so every so often I just re-dyed my hair with a blonde box dye. Eventually, my hair settled to a nice, light ash blonde. Soon, my slightly darker ash blonde roots grew through, but I let them, as after they passed the awkward roots stage, they began to look nice and natural, like I had had my hair styled to look like that. At the moment, the longest parts of my roots just about touch my shoulders. So, that leaves me to how my hair is now. A couple days ago I added the purple Manic Panic dye, in Electric Amethyst, but it didn't work well. Unfortunately I have no pictures to display how it looks currently.
My bleach kit and the toner both arrived today, so although I might wait until all of the purple comes out, I'm in need of some advice on how to bleach my hair without causing too much damage. Naturally, my hair is soft and fair/thin. Also, I've read information about a bleach bath, and I wanted to know if that method would be better, or if it wouldn't help in my situation. Additionally, has anyone used the bleach kit and the toner that I have, and how are they?
Thank you!
Return the bleach kit and get some blondor or Blondme and some 20 volume peroxide. Bleach kits are really harsh and generally have a very strong peroxide, even more harsh than needed when using in a bleach bath. They have bad quality bleach powder too which is even more important. Blondor and BlondeMe are much better quality bleach and will give you a much better result and less damage. Also, higher volume peroxide works much faster meaning you're more likely to end up with a patchy result.
To emphasise, even though I know you said you're going to wait, definitely don't bleach while the purple is still there, purple when bleached often turns green and that's the exact opposite of what you want when trying for pastels!
You'll then want to do a strand test (preferably on a piece of hair you can cut out without it showing (not always possible) or from hair collected from you hair brush. Mix up a tiny amount of the bleach with peroxide and paint it on the strand. Wrap it in cling film and put it in a pocket or somewhere it can stay at roughly body temp, not too warm but not cold. Check it after 20 mins and then check it every 5 mins after that until you have a pale yellow (inside of banana colour). Then you'll know how long to leave the bleach on. If it lifts very quickly, get a 10 vol peroxide or dilute the 20 vol. You can do this with water, same amount of water to peroxide.
I don't think a bleach bath will be quite strong enough.
Thank you! Unfortunately I ordered the bleach kit online, off of Amazon, after a friend had recommended it to me, so I think I'll just have to make use of it.
I took a picture of my hair currently, my natural colour has returned to the top half of my hair, but there's still a slight purple tint at my ends, where my hair was it it's lightest.
I recommend selling it or something. Seriously, they're not good. Your hair is really quite pale and looks like it's very fine and fragile, a bad beach will not be good for it.
As it's faded that much, you should be ok.
I have fine hair that is dark blonde/ light brown and I wouldn't dream of touching it with one of those bleach kits (I once had to have my at the time waist length hair cut in a short layered bob thanks to over bleaching so believe me when I say it's not worth the risk!). When I last bleached mine I used 10 Vol and diluted it into a bleach bath and it still lightened my hair to a very light yellow very quickly and mine is a bit darker and thicker than yours!
Thank you both for the advice! I asked my mum if we could go out and buy something else, but she told me that I'd have to make do, so we did my hair. I left about an inch of my roots dark, as I didn't want to deal with bad regrowth. Luckily, I love how it turned out! It's still a bit damp, but it doesn't feel damaged, and I'm very happy with the results. There aren't any brassy tones, either.
Even though my hair is still quite soft, I'm going to be doing regular deep conditions, and I wont be washing it too often, so that the natural oils can come through.
Ok, glad you didn't have any disasters - just be careful with heat styling and general wear and tear, my irreparable damage happened a while after the actual bleaching! (also make sure you don't overlap next time you bleach or use any hair dyes that use peroxide over this bleach, damage is cumulative over time and it can take up to a month for damage to show)
Me too π I don't use anything like straighteners or a hair dryer. Occasionally (maybe once a month, or less), I use curlers. My hair is naturally very straight, and I've never like styling my hair with heat anyway, as my hair is so fine. Also, as I didn't bleach my roots, I'm planning on letting them grow out, so I won't need to touch up the regrowth, and when I am to dye my hair using colours, I'll be using dyes that don't contain peroxide. So, I think that if I take care of it, my hair will be okay.
I'm glad it went ok, but as lauralei says, it can take several weeks for damage to show. Please, please, next time you bleach, don't get a kit and get a good quality bleach. You can get them on Amazon too.
