Hi everyone,
when I was a kid I used to dye my hair all the time. Red, black, blonde, orange, you name it. Me being even stupider, I decided to go bleach blonde (like barbie) now my original color was dark brown, like Anne Hathaway.
When I went bleach blonde, the disaster started happening. Right after I used a Kerastese (whatever it is spelled, is the WORST shampoo, please stay away from it) I noticed
- extreme hair breakage
- before dyeing my hair I used to have THICK hair, now I am pretty much going bald
- thin ness
and more.
I dyed my hair to black, but my hair is so bad it's ridiculous I dont know what to do anymore. I'm 20 and i'm losing hair
Please please please can anyone help me get my hair back on track? I am going to a dermatologist tomorrow,
should i be taking any hair masks? anything to help GROW my hair back and make it thick and normal again? im so depressed
ps - the hair breakage started happening a year ago, but even now my hair still breaks off π

Is your hair just breaking off, or is it falling out at the roots?
If its just breaking off, then thats basically just normal bleach damage. If you tried going straight from dark brown to platinum blonde with just bleach and quickly, odds are your hair was completely fried. There is nothing that can help that much damage - generally the advice is to get protein treatments (Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor) being a favourite, to switch to conditioner-only washing, to give up heat and damaging hairstyles, and to just be as gentle as possible. But, by the sounds of it your hair is well and truly fried, and unfortunately the only solution is to cut the damage off - if you try to keep the damaged hair, the damage will just keep travelling up, so even your new growth will be affected by it and will grow poorly
Dyeing your hair can't make it fall out (unless you have really bad scalp burns) so if your hair is actually falling out the chances are it has nothing to do with dyeing your hair at all.
The only solution is to cut all the damaged hair off and start from scratch. The best way to grow healthy hair is to have a healthy lifestyle (boring but true lol) so eat well, drink water, get plenty of sleep, and do some exercise. Cut out processed foods, additives and chemicals. Stop smoking etc.
Hi there,
Thank you both for your help. Unfortunately not only am I experience hair breakage, but definetly hair loss - as my hair went from being very thick, to very thin, barely enough to tie in a pony tail anymore.
What do you guys recommend for my hair loss? Any way to grow my hair back and have it thick like it used to when I was younger? I am 20
You can get breakage at the root, which could look like hair loss. If it's falling out from the root then it will normally have a hair root attached. If it's that then it's almost certainly nothing to do with dying, especially a year on.
If there's no root, then it's probably very bad breakage, and also probably not caused by the kerastese, but by over bleaching and dying.
Wicked Pixie has really gone over what you can do. If it's damage, get it all cut. Sounds like you'd just have to go for a pixie unfortunately. But the problem with this kind of damage is it travels up the hair and weakens it. It's even possible that it could still be breaking off close to the root from damage left over from before as it continues up the hair.
If it's a deeper problem then it's either something you need treatment for (say a bad fungal infection or hormones) or you need to basically just live well! Eat well, sleep well, try to illuminate stress (which can lead to hair loss on its own).
There is no magic way, sorry. I should also add, our hair changes throughout our life. So if it is something other than breakage, it might never be quite the same as it was when you were younger.
If it's falling out from the root, it Could be a change in your hormones. Have a blood test and as the others suggested, healthy living and talking to a doctor is the best choice
Thank you so much for your help you guys. Just an update, went to an internal med doctor, and am getting my blood levels checked - possible thyroid problem, not sure yet.
If anyone has any ideas to help me grow my hair thick again, please do let me know. I feel like I am already balding.
If you have any masks or specific products (heard of redken, but not sure which to choose!) pleaaaase let me know too.
Thank you thank you thank youuuu all!
I lost about two thirds of my hair about 5 years ago due to side effects from a prescribed drug. It did eventually grow back to be just as thick and abundant as it was before. So if it is a medical issue once you are on top of it there is no reason you won't be able to have the same type and amount of hair you had before. So try not to worry too much and let the doctors do their thing.
thank you π ive been taking biotin, prenatal pills, folic acid, etc. to help aid my hair, really hope it grows back as thick as it used to be! i fear the older I get, the less chance I have for my hair to grow back again D:
thank you
At 20 you really don't need to start worrying about getting older....
