Ends of hair won't bleach past peachy orange

Wow I'm back with another thread!  I can't help it, it seems like if I run into an issue this is the best place to get an answer! πŸ™‚

So I've been lightening my hair with my friend and helping her out with all the information I have learned here and a few other places.  She's a lot farther into this process than I am and is basically that pale yellow all over except for the bottom 40-50% of her hair.  That bit has been stubbornly peachy colored for the last 3 bleach baths, it just isn't budging?  I am only one bleach bath into my process so I don't have any experience with this and I'm not sure what to suggest or what might be going on.

She is going with a pastel color so we're worried that if we can't get those ends any lighter, that the color won't take.  The bleach baths have been 20 vol developer dilluted with 50% shampoo but it really honestly has not changed those ends for a while now.  The same bleach bath will take her roots (light brown) to pale yellow.

Any ideas on what is going on here?  What can we do to avoid continuing to bleach?  Thank you as always in advance for the help.  I'd love to know for her and also for me in case I encounter this issue myself down the road!

Did she have old dye on the lengths? If so, then use a colour remover, they still work after bleaching. The artificial pigments in hair dye do not react as well to bleach as the natural pigments in virgin hair.
If no,t is she keeping the bleach covered when it is on? The bleach on the lengths/ends can dry out and stop lightening, or just get cold and work less efficiently.

It's possibly old dye!  She started with a dark burgundy (box dye) and did color remover before bleach bathing but only once.  She is keeping it covered too BUT we've been doing it at my house and I admittedly have been keeping the house pretty chilly with the AC so that might be a factor?  Thanks for the advice!  I guess we'll try a color remover on the ends and if that doesn't work try the bleach bath next time away from my chilly house lol!

I would definitely try another colour remover in that case.
Just put it on the peachy parts, wrap in cling film, keep it warm and leave on for the full hour. Make sure the hair is clean/clarified with no conditioner or product before you start.
Also it is possible that the hair is just stained, and won't go much lighter regardless of what you try. Going from a dark box dye to light blonde is impossible for a lot of people.

Just wanted to add that the color remover won't work well in a cold space either, so go easy on the AC! πŸ™‚

Thanks again you guys!  Unfortunately, it looks like she's stuck with these peach ends.  Which means I probably will be also since the color I started with isn't terribly far from what she started with.

We attempted three separate strand tests tonight, all with a warmer house and careful measures to make sure the hair was covered and kept from getting cool.  We did one for a color remover, one with straight 20 volume bleach and another one with straight 30 volume bleach (both bleaching done for 30 minutes).  The color did not BUDGE on any of the strands πŸ™

This is very depressing, as we both set out doing this solely to go pastel (I want to go lilac and she was going to go lilac or rose). ;_;

Can you post a pic of your friends hair? If she tones the peachy parts she can probably still get a rose shade, or pastel lilac going into a warmer or darker shade. There are ways of working around stained ends.

Your hair may not be stained, lots of factors affect how much dyes stain. The amount of times the dye was applied and how porous the hair was at the time, virgin hair is less likely to stain than previously bleached hair.

I will try to get a pic next time she is around!  I have another idea too which is just sort of a last ditch thing BUT it occurred to me that my 30 volume developer isn't recent.  The 20 volume I purchased recently for the purpose of bleach bathing but the 30 volume was from 4 or 5 years ago when I did some vibrant red hair and possibly it's just bad at this point?  I don't know why I didn't think of that until last night laying in bed but I didn't lol.  Gonna get a fresh bottle though just in case.

Okay more updates - we did try another strand test with a brand new bottle of 30 vol.  Still no lift. We made sure it stayed moist and warm (not hot) throughout the process.

I can't get a good pic of the color of her ends unfortunately.  They aren't peach anymore as she used a purple shampoo to take out some of the warmth and brassiness.  I would say that looking at the "base level chart" that her ends are equal to a level 8 with some strands of level 7, just slightly more cool toned now.  Her top part is definitely level 9-10 (very very pale yellow).

She wants to go lavender after all and I have Pravana Luscious Lavender but I know that is only going to take to her top parts.  What can we do to get her as close to this lavender dream as possible? lol - Could we do the Pravana on top and then transition into a slightly darker lavender by using something like Pravana Violet diluted with conditioner?  Or even just Pravana Violet diluted all over?  I have no experience going pastel or this light!

I would go for pravana violet diluted. You will need a stronger purple on the ends, so either go for a lavender to purple gradient, or a darker shade all over.

WickedPixie thank you SO much for all of your help in my threads!  I really appreciate it!  One last question if you happen to know this - how long should Pravana Vivids be left on for?  I know the box reads 20 minutes but it seems like everyone agrees that is not long enough.  However, what IS long enough seems to vary greatly depending on who you ask.  I've seen some people say one hour, two, four or even overnight.

If she wants the colour to last the. Leave it ln for at least a few hours. The longer you leave it ln, the longer the colour will last.

Thanks Marthakins!  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a "too long" time period in there haha.  We're fine with keeping it on for a long time though, whatever works the best! πŸ™‚

Nah you are fine to leave it on as long as you like πŸ™‚ I often leave mine over night when I want a colour to last.
