Dying hair for guys, short on side long on top!

Hello!

I have mousy brown/dark browny blonde hair and am looking to go something like this: (see pic)

I decided to go for highlights on my original color at a salon, but it went quite brassy and orange. I am growing my hair on top so its very short on the sides (not highlighted). The stylist then toned it and it was a little less brassy. However at the moment it just looks like it has an orange hue to it, and not that ashy blonde look I am going for.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on what to do next? Do I bleach it all then apply a hair color?

Sorry still very new to all this, but determined to get this lovely color! THANKS!!  πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum πŸ™‚

Do you have a photo of your current hair so we can advise better?
You can add one to a post by clicking on the blue "Attachments and other options" link just underneath the text box.  You will then see the option to add photos to your post.

Hello and Thanks Nikki!!

Here is a pic of my current hair. As you can see a little browny/ now gingery with a couple of subtle highlights at front. It seems my hair really pics up on those brassy gingery tones but would love to get that look above!  ;D ;D

You might consider a bleach bath if you want to lighten it more - bleach baths are a bit safer and kinder to the hair than straight bleach.

But just to get rid of orange/ginger tones, you'd normally use toners that are usually purple in colour (Touch of Silver is a good one to try!) to bring the hair closer to neutral, as purple and orange are opposites on the colour wheel.

However, the colour you posted in the first picture looks more caramel to me, so perhaps someone might have another suggestion for you to achieve that specific shade.  I'd say starting to use purple toners would give you a great start though - look for semi-permanent hair dyes that you don't mix with anything, you just put them onto your hair from the bottle.  If the dye is very concentrated, make sure you dilute it well with conditioner only.  With semis, you can keep adding a little bit at a time, every time you shampoo or condition, till you achieve what you're after.

Would love to see 'after' pictures if you get around to posting some, good luck!

Great suggestions guys! Thanks!

So I should do a bleach bath and what volume should I do? 20 30 or 40?
Then apply a blue toner? Will I be able to keep the different depths in my hair ( ie not an all over block color!)

Sorry for all the questions I am SO new to all this so please feel free to spell it out to me like I'm
An idiot!! ;D

I suppose to me now, after being part of this forum, the opposites on the colour wheel are "purple" and "brassiness".

Ok so I brought some bleach (Vol 30 developer) and the some hair dye in a beige blonde (very natural light light brown color). I also did a snip test of the bleach and found that in 20 mins on a strand of hair it had lifted it to a nice lightness. I really don't want it wiped out to a bright bright yellow in fears that it may remove the levels of highlights in my hair and don't want to make it one block color!
I think I will put the bleach in my hair to lift it a bit and then go in with the hair dye. What do you guys think? I just worry if I leave the bleach untill my hair is all one light color, and then dye it I will have such a basic one-color-lego-man look!  *anyone*

If you do a mild bleach bath that doesn't take the rest of your hair lighter than the already highlighted parts then you will keep the highlighted look.

Blonde hairdye is basically bleach, and it's always a bad idea to bleach and then use a permanent hair dye on top of it.

Bleach and then tone it with a diluted purple shade.
