Dyed Bright Red to 'Dirty' Blonde

Hi! I need some advice please!

I have bright red hair (Manic Panic Vampire Red), and really want to go blonde, not platinum but a dirty blonde type colour (I've attempted to attach a photo of a colour I really like).

...is it going to be a complete nightmare? Am I best just going to a hair dresser? Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks πŸ™‚

That's a pretty cool blonde to get from red. It's going to be difficult at best, depending on whether you have cuticle staining from the red. It's often impossible to completely remove red without a serious amount of damage.

That being said, if you want to get the red out you should start by using colour removers, decolour remover is the best on semi dyes usually. You can use them up to three times before they won't do any more. So do all three and see what you're left with. Hopefully they will shift at least some of the red. They are drying so you'll need a serious deep condition afterwards. You will need to wait a week after using colour removers before using bleach to stop the colour reoxidising.

After that you can start bleach bathing to gradually lighten the colour you are left with. This might just produce shades of lighter Orange rather than blonde. You can do bleach baths once every two weeks.

You might have to settle with a warmer colour than you are aiming for, depending how light your hair will go. Unfortunately staining is permanent so the only thing left to do if parts of your hair Will not get to blonde is to cut those parts off. You will also probably have to cut some of your length off if you have long hair, as even doing this in the most gentle way will cause damage.

Don't go to a hairdresser!they have a terrible track record of ruining people's hair with bleach. You're much better being in control of the process.

This was kinda what I expected to hear (I.e it's hard!)! Thanks for the advice, maybe I'll try and get to a dark blonde that's a bit warmer first...

I've really struggled to keep the red colour in for long which is one of the reasons I'm dyeing it, even with using sulphite free shampoo/conditioner with colour added to it, so that makes me hopeful that the colour will come out without too much of a fight, but I really don't want to damage my hair to the levels I have done in the past so I'll have a think about it...

Thanks again!  πŸ™‚

Keep in mind that it will probably take a minimum of six months to even get to a dark blonde stage, and you'll have shades of orange in between, as Vampire Red is orange based.
