Even if I lather it in shampoo, when I do a coconut oil soak over night my hair comes out soft, straight, flat, smooth, but also really yellowed and greasy.
The effect is probably worse on me because I have some darker strands that I am getting rid of slowly to save my length and condition, mostly at the ends.
I take pure virgin coconut oil, rub it in my hands, and slather it on my hair. All over. So much that my hair looks orange. Then I make a bun, put it in a cap, and wash it out a few hours later usually keeping it in overnight and washing out in the morning.
Am I doing it wrong? Should I heat the oil and make it more liquidy? Maybe the stuff is too thick because I don't melt it first ?
No you're not doing anything wrong. Just like when blonde hair is wet it looks darker/more yellow, or white hair can look silver, blue or lavender sometimes depending on the toner. It's the same kind of effect with oil.
How are you washing it out, with shampoo? When I do an overnight oil soak, in the morning I coat my hair with conditioner (I use a thin, silicone free one - suave tropical coconut), let it set for a half hour or more, then rinse it out in warm water and finish it with cold. I got the tip on here + it really seems to get the oil out better than shampoo.

Thanks! I usually just lather with shampoo.
This may be a dumb q but how do I tell what is silicone free? What are the ingredients of silicones ?
Here's a thread that explains things well when it comes to silicones:

Usually they end in -one or -xane
