Disaster!!! Grey roots with ash blonde bottom :-(

Hi Guys!! I am hoping for some help... or any advice will be deeply appreciated lol!

So my hair is a mousey brown colour naturally, and I have dyed it black for the last year (don't ask!). I then made the decision to go blonde, which I have been before and it looks really nice. I wanted it quite light and bright but not brassy. So I started on my quest about 2 weeks ago...

I used Colourb4 colour remover twice, which left me with ginger hair... I was expecting this. I then applied 3 lots of lightening kits (3 days in between) which resulted in me having about 2 inches of white roots, and the rest a very light orange. Anyway I read online that if I use an ash blonde it will counteract the brassy tones. So I did this (ultra light ash blonde as I wanted to keep my hair light) and ended up with grey/blue roots and ash blonde rest of my hair! I don't know what to do as my hair is in VERY bad condition now but I don't want to dye it brown as its taken me lots of effort to get it like this. I still want to be blonde, as light as can be but I want it to be even all over! Any suggestion on shades/colours/tones that I can use on top of this mess? Thanks guys, I really wanna make this work xxx

Ouch... assuming by 'lightening kits', you mean bleach kits.

You will need a good protein treatment (Joico Reconstructor is well recommended here), deep conditioner and a decent cut.

Hopefully someone will be along to advise on the colour - please don't use anything labelled as 'permanent' or that requires a developer. You will damage your hair even further by doing so.

Oh your poor hair. You can do nothing else permanent for at least a month, probably not at all on that hair until it's grown out. It's going to be hard making sure it doesn't start breaking. As mentioned, get some Joico Reconstructor and leave it on for at least 10 mins. Just don't overuse it as it can end up being almost as bad as the damage from bleaching (it makes your hair brittle eventually and it will break then. I have trouble using it at all). If your roots are white now, you might get some breakage there I'm sorry to say. Once hair is bleached to white it's gone too far.

Can you post a photo of what you have now? We can then help on the right toners. You'll have to use different ones on the roots and lengths, as you've found out. If it's a light orange, it's likely stained and won't go lighter no matter what you do (even further bleaching).

Hi both. Thanks for your replies. I will definitely go for the conditioner but I cannot walk round with this crazy coloured hair. Like I said its bright grey for the first say 5 inches then the rest is a nice light ash blonde. All the orange bits are gone. I need to put something else on it to even out the colour but still keep it quite light. My hair is already quite damaged now so I am willing (I know im crazy) to use one more dying kit on it so long as it fixes it. I'm thinking a medium blonde? Do you think this will dye all my hair the same colour? I'm so confused πŸ™  I cant upload a pic right now as I am at work... xx

Thing is, I don't think another dye with peroxide (any permanent or demi) will work, definitely not to make it match up, and it'll also almost certainly push your hair over the edge. What you don't know is, it can take several weeks for the full extent of the damage to show up. It might already be too late. Unless you're happy going and getting a pixie cut. If you want to keep any length then, excuse me for being frank, you'd be stupid. I'm not being deliberately rude, it's the truth. As I say, if you're happy to get it cut then you could do a medium blonde dye.

You need to add some more yellow back into your roots. Purple is used in ash blondes to counteract against the yellow. As your roots were already almost white that's why it turned grey. Look for a warm blonde SEMI dye/toner in Superdrug (assuming you're in the UK). I don't remember the name of the brand now I'm afraid, I'm not into blonde myself πŸ™‚ Don't put it all over, put it on the roots only.

I know I would be crazy to put any other bleach product on my hair, but I literally cannot go weeks with it like this, I would rather have a pixie cut but have all my hair the same colour! I thought maybe a medium blonde as the bleach content might not be as high (not sure if it works like that?). Its a shame there isn't a blonde colour that I can put on my hair that doesn't have bleach in it! As long as a medium blonde, with yellow in it, will override this horrid light grey colour, then that will have to do for now.

Thanks again for your help!

Janine just told you that you can use a semi permanent  warm blonde toner with no bleach in it from super drug.

Re-read the second paragraph in my last post πŸ™‚ That is the way to do it now. I can't guarantee it'll be totally even, but it'll be a lot better and will remove the grey.

" I thought maybe a medium blonde as the bleach content might not be as high (not sure if it works like that?)"

Doesn't really work like that, no. Most blonde dyes have around 30 vol, which is strong. Even some of the light blondes are the same, it's more about the base colour. If you look at the package and it gives the same blonde result for darker hair, then it's strong. Even if it gives only 4 shades lift, it's strong.

Believe me, do not use any more products with peroxide. Take Janine's advice & go for the Semi, you'll save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run. I had my hair done "professionally" from black to blonde & they ruined my hair. Literually one more peroxide product & I would have been left with less then 2inches of hair, I was almost in tears leaving the salon, it's taken me a lot of time & effort to get my hair to a "decent" state again & I've had to keep trimming my hair every 3-4 weeks to remove all the damage, avoid using heat ect. Infact for almost 9months I put no heat on my hair at all would only wash it once a month as my hair would take so long to dry where it was damaged, thankfully it's not gummy or stretchy anymore. I can't stress enough the horrors of having damaged hair.

The semis from Superdrug are Colour Effects and Colour Episodes. Choose the warm blonde options (Honey blonde) to add some warmth back in. Give it a good wash with a clarifying shampoo (roots only, avoid scrubbing the lengths/ends,your poor hair has been through enough and will be super fragile) before applying.

Your only other option would be to use a colour remover ONLY on your roots. Even if you were prepared to risk the damage another blonde dye is unlikely to lift out the grey tones, as colour can't lift colour.
