Dark streaks after 1st bleach - going platinum

Long time dyed dark going for platinum here. I used two colour removers (Colour B4 as it's the only one available in my country) without much results to show - it definetely got rid of a lot of buildup, but I had bleached the ends before going dark again, so I had hoped it would be lighter. Anyway, I did a test strand which lightened very well, so I slathered my hair in coconut oil and went for it, lengths first and then the roots at last. I should have waited longer with the roots, because they are now a lovely buttery blonde, going yellow and then orange down the lengths. I expected this, of course, and I'm actually pleased at how well it lifted, but I also have some streaks here and there that are dark, almost the colour I started with. I'm a little afraid that it's staining from previous dyes and that it won't lift any more, and not sure what to do about it - I'm fine with a little unevenness, I know I didn't exactly have the best canvas to start with, but I don't want dark streaks in otherwise blonde hair!

Obviously I'll let my hair rest for a couple of weeks now, I don't want to lose any more length than absolutely necessary, but if anyone has any advice on how to proceed I would be very grateful!

I'll add some pictures when my hair is dry. πŸ™‚

Edit: Oh and while I know bleach baths can be done with a week's rest and regular bleaches a month apart, does anyone know how long I should wait before BBing after a regular bleach? Assuming my hair's condition is well, of course.

It's possible that it could be staining. It's possible that you could find it hard to shift the orange and darker patches.

I personally would wait a month after a full bleach to do a bleach bath or a permanent colour, the reason being it can take that length of time for damage to show up fully so you can't really assess how much damage the bleach has caused until then.

Thanks for your reply! I guess I'll just have to wait and see. My test strand lifted well (and my hair even better) so hopefully I'll get a light enough base to tone it platinum.

Oh holy h... abort!!! I got impatient and used a bleach kit, L101 by Schwarzkopf, as my hair felt in good condition. It is now noodle quality, tearing off if I pull it the slightest. It's not much lighter either, a pale golden orange. Jeez, I knew better than to bleach again so quickly and definitely to not use a lightening kit with questionable reviews! While my hair probably wouldn't have been great with my regular kit, this one was just not good. It damaged way more than it lightened, and two boxes wasn't enough to cover my armpit length hair.

I'll soak my hair in K-Pak and deep conditioners while praying to the hair gods for now, and dye over with a darker blonde as soon as the stores open again.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. πŸ™

Firstly, don't use anything that has to be mixed with peroxide (developer) to dye over it! If you must dye over it use something like Adore diluted with conditioner (it may look patchy as your hair will be more porous in the areas that are more damaged).

Secondly, if your hair is breaking the best thing you can do is get as much of the damage cut off as you can bear to do, damage travels up the hair shaft and you may find it just continues to get worse!

Why not anything with peroxide? Is that just due to the damage caused by it, or is it something else? Would a semi-dye like Casting Creme Gloss or Schwarzkopf Country Colors be better? I'd love to try Adore but I live in Norway and we don't have a lot to choose from.

I'll go over my split ends as soon as I can get a new scissor, and continue with K-Pak and conditioners. I've got a strand that's all rubber so finger's crossed it can be rescued. πŸ™

It's because peroxide lifts the cuticle of your hair so if the structure of your hair is already damaged then treating it with peroxide it will make matters worse. Anything that you have to mix with peroxide will be damaging at this point, semi permanents use a lower volume but if your hair is already snapping off I wouldn't advise risking it. You will also have the problem that any dye you put over it, even a permanent dye will fade quickly due to your hair being overly porous from the damage.
What brands are available to you? You really need something that's a direct dye such as those available here on Bee Unique.

I feel bad for blatantly disregarding your advice (thanks anyway!) but I need to go job searching as of Monday and I can't do that with bright yellow hair, even though it fits the season... I purchased L'Oreal Recital etc. in 9.13 and 8.1, I think I'll mix them together although I'm a little tempted to just use the lighter one, lol. I'm worried it will get darker again and I don't want to have wrecked my hair for nothing, heh. I'm still bent on platinum sometime, as my hair miraculously bounced back from my last bleach - it's far from perfect, obviously, but it's not snapping or gummy-like and I am eternally grateful to K-Pak for that - but I'm definitely going to give it some much deserved rest before I touch bleach again.

Edit: Done! My hair didn't fall off (and from now on I solemnly swear to not hurt it again in a long time!) and the disappointment of it not turning out as ashy and cool as I had hoped was made up for by the realization that I actually look sort of good with warm blonde hair. I had dark hair as a kid and while I'm still pale and everything, I always figured warm blondes and reds weren't for me. But I look super cute and apparently I look less intimidating with blonde hair too because people respond better to me now? Lol, weird. I'm happy 'bout that, though. It's hard enough being socially awkward if people aren't going to peg you as a b... too, lol.

Anyway, I'm going to enjoy being blonde for a while even though it's not platinum. But heck, I haven't bleached this far only to let go! Just need to nurse my hair back to health first. Thank you so much for your advice, Lauralei!

Well, I'm glad you got a result you can live with, but box dyes contain a lot of silicones normally and this acts to patch together the hair temporarily. As that gradually washes away that is when you might find you have severe problems, especially as box dyes have high level of peroxide which is very harsh. You already had hair that was breaking at the slightest pull, this will have only made it worse. The real damage often takes a few weeks to really show.

I'm not at all offended, I gave you the advice for your benefit not my own, it makes no difference to me!

Just to be clear on it, I would not ever bleach hair again that was already breaking off even after it has been rested as damaged hair does not repair itself. (just so I know that I have put that out there for anybody else reading this in the future to know how risky that is!) but it's your hair and your choice! I'm glad you have managed to find something you can live with for now, and I hope the damage is as minimal as it appears at the moment.
