Yes it's perfect! Go for it.
Can coconut oil be used with semi-permanent box dyes such as Loreal Casting Creme Gloss, or would it block dye uptake?
Reading this thread, I felt inspired, just went downstairs and melted the coconut oil I use in my cakes and whacked it on my head... Wish I'd seen this before I did my roots last week! Really excited about it-Cheers Theodora!
Yes marthamagic; it works with all conventional box dyes to protect from peroxide damage. I have used coconut oil under a Nice n Easy semi perm (medium ash blonde) and the dye uptake was even better than on my test strands without the oil (that was my first dabble with coconut oil under dyes so I was still skeptical and did strand tests). It actually took so well that I thought it looked too dark and ended up removing it with Colour B4.
You're welcome Amyce, I think word should be spread to prevent serial dyers from damaging their tresses too much 😉
Yaaaaay! Looks like I shall be going auburn tomorrow and saying goodbye to bleach for a long time!
I absolutely love this thread... as a hairdresser I will definitely be trying this method... will use myself as a guinea pig first of course 🙂 if it proves beneficial then I will certainly be including and recommending the treatment to all my necessary clients..
There are some salon suppliers that can provide a colour stripper, but in my experience, they do not work that well..
Also it may be difficult for salons to offer the coconut oil treatment before hand as the client will have to be at their appointment at least an extra hour and a half before hand, therefore costing the client more money.
I've seen some hairdressers use oil directly into their dye mix before applying (seen people use Morroccanoil for this, which surprised me seeing as it is loaded with silicones, but I guess silicones don't prevent dye uptake). It's a shame coconut oil tends to be solid unless it's very warm, otherwise the solution might be to mix it with the dye/bleach before applying.
But you are right, applying coconut oil in salon and letting it soak for 1-2 hours would add too much time to the appointment (costing money to the salon as well as the client). I've never heard of people applying coconut and then the colour or bleach directly, but maybe someone might try it and see if it still prevents enough damage without the long soak. Maybe massaging it in makes it soak sufficiently without leaving it for a long time?
More experimentation is needed ;).
I left mine on for about 15 mins and it worked ok 🙂
Worked a treat! Hair felt great afters! Will definitely be doing it before my next bleach...
Used this method when I did my roots the other day with 30vol, left the oil on overnight and bleached the next day. Worked so well! Very little damage and my roots don't feel like straw when wet like they did last time, it feels like normal hair!
I'm so glad lots of people are having good results with this. Thank the heavens for coconut oil 🙂
I did a coconut oil treatment last week, left it for an hour and my hair was so much softer afterwards.
I bleached my hair on Sunday after having coconut oil in my hair for 1-2 hours, it definitely stopped any extra damage being done to my hair. I have very rough cuticles though as I used to have very frizzy hair a few years ago, think this adds to my hair sometimes feeling a bit dry. Def use this technique though!
