I wanna use that in my hair again this weekend and maybe leave it in overnight but does it make hair colour fade? Because i dont want to have to re-dye soon..:/

I think it can definitely make colour fade a bit, like most oil treatments really.

About argan oil actually, the girl on the Long hair forum who does all the research on this, Ktani, says that for best results people should use both argan oil and coconut oil, as one chelates iron and the other one copper, so that gives you the best protection. I used argan oil as well when I did my bleach, just slathered it on top of the coconut oil (seeing as it's the expensive one out of the two). I've also heard of people just using argan and not coconut, but I'm not sure the results were as good as just coconut.

Hi! I have been looking around the forum in the last days and I registered almost only to say THANK YOU!!! I was thinking about cutting my hair short because I lost my curls after a few unwise choices but they're back and bouncing!! 😀 I'm so happy!!

You are so welcome! I think the word should be spread about coconut oil as a pre-bleach treatment (and generally as a natural hair conditioner - not to mention it tastes lovely).
Actually I think hairdressers should know about it. I know of people from the Long Hair forum who went to their hairdresser with coconut oil on before a bleach. But you've got to have a very open-minded hairdresser.

I'm not sure if hairdressers really don't know about it yet - it's so natural, it should be familiar - but I suppose that they are getting some extra money for using and suggesting certain products, so they just wouldn't get anything for coconut oil treatments.

This is just a thought though, I'm definitely not wanting to accuse anyone of anything here, I just say it *could* be a reason why it's not something well-known yet. I'm pretty sure it's nothing very new.

OH MY GOD. I am loving this coconut oil trick! I bought the H&B one as it was half price, and after me and my boss ate some, I went home and chucked some on my hair. I then bleach bathed with a 30vol, and by the time I was done applying the colour was nearly perfect!!
Deffo hasn't damaged as much as it normally does either, YAY I have healthy flamingo pink haiirrrr!

I've also just 30vol bleach bathed and I was terrified I'd ruin my hair with it, but my newly cut hair still feels all soft even after a bleaching.
I love coconut oil 😀

Yaaay Meeshybop, so glad it worked out for you! Haha that H&B stuff is awesome isn't it, it just smells so damn sweet and edible it's hard not to eat it.

Dandelion & Theodora: It does seem so strange something as simple as slapping some oil on before a bleach hasn't been widely exploited the big people at loreal etc. I mean they could use pure coconut oil, some argan oil and some perfume and extra ingredients to make it their own custom blend and then salons could charge so much more money as the whole treatment process would take over an hour. Not that this is a good thing for us as consumers but it would save some people from totally wrecking their hair!

You are totally right about that. There is some research being carried by Procter and Gamble at the moment on doing their own chelating treatment to prevent free radical damage from the bleach/peroxide. I don't know how long it's going to take them though before we start seeing pre-bleaching/colouring treatments in salons.
But yea if I had a salon, I would give all my clients pre-treatments because that would:
- protect my ass by limiting damage to the clients hair/scalp.
- probably increase the frequency at which people would do bleach and colour because of the limited damage

I'm writing this while my own coconut/argan oil mix is sitting on my hair, about to do a bleach in a bit. 🙂

You leave it on before bleaching! But be careful with the room temperature, if it's too cold the oil will go solid in your hair. Leave it on for at least 1 hour and then just apply the bleach/dye over it. It should make it really easy to spread thanks to the oil, so gives much less patchy result than doing over hair without coconut oil.

No, you need pure unrefined coconut oil. You'll find it in the food aisle in health food stores. Try somewhere like Whole Foods or Trader Joes. It's fairly easy to find online as well.

And Silver75, you can do whichever one you choose depending on what lightening effect you're after, but a bleach bath with 20 vol is going to be very very subtle. I've done it before and it only lightened about a shade.
