Coconut oil to prevent damage from peroxide/bleach

Coconut oil is a natural way to help improve the health of your hair. There is concern that coconut oil might increase total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol. But there is contradictory evidence that shows that coconut oil might actually increase levels of “good” cholesterol and have little to no effect on total or “bad” cholesterol levels.

Well, if you're ingesting it... that's a whole other topic.  Most of us here are using it topically (applied TO the hair) to reduce damage from using chemicals where the coconut oil acts as a chelating agent.

I had to eat a bounty earlier today after reading about all this coconut oil : ) I bought this stuff  KTC coconut oil they have a big website as they do many oils.

it doesn't smell of anything though, I have been using it for a week or so leaving it in for a few hours then washing out.

so when you put this on to bleach isn't your hair supposed to be dry to bleach?

So if you are bleaching parts of the hair and it got oil on I am bleaching parts that are still ginger will I be able to see that if its soaked in oil?

Sorry to sound a dope  *puzz*

Your hair is still technically "dry" when you are bleaching with coconut oil, as oil isn't aqueous.  🙂  It works great, really.  I use coconut oil all the time before I use bleach or permanent colour.  I leave it set on my hair for about an hour, then bleach or colour.

So if you are bleaching parts of the hair and it got oil on I am bleaching parts that are still ginger will I be able to see that if its soaked in oil?

If you are only bleaching the portions that are still ginger, it may be more difficult to see them with coconut oil applied.  I'd suggest trying to section out the areas that need attention and only applying coconut oil to those areas.  You may have to use foil or cling film to keep the hair you're bleaching separated from the rest during processing.

I have plenty of cling film left over from the color removers I used. I will try that thank you.

The things we do to go blonde!!  *yay*

Forgot to ask, can you use ordinary tin foil as in bacofoil what you cook the turkey in for hair to section parts off ? *hair*

Hey everyone!
So to answer the question of Saoirse you're not supposed to wash out the coconut oil. The last time I did this with a semi-perm dye my hair was literally dripping with oil and it did not block dye uptake, on the contrary, I noticed faster and more intense uptak of the dye (so much so that it was a bit dark for my taste as it was an ash blonde dye which ended up being more of a dark blonde than my expected medium).
I will let you know the results with pictures and everything when I bleach on Monday.

Places to buy coconut oil: I've bought some from Holland and Barretts before and from a local organic grocery store. Cheap non-organic coconut oil can be purchased from indian/exotic stores (I've bought some from spicesofindia.co.uk).
There is also lots available on Amazon. I would recommend there the shop called naissance which is reasonably priced, I bought some argan oil and hemp oil for my hair from their.

Hope this helps!

so non organic oil can be used for this process ?

I think it has to be true aluminum foil.  Peroxide developer and bleach can react with certain metals.  I've used aluminum foil that you buy at a grocers before, but I can't speak for all products.

And yes, it's been said before that non-organic oil can be used for this process.  It just must be 100% pure coconut oil and have no other additives.

In your quote, she just mentions that she bought it in an organic store. It doesn't have to be organic.

Organic is just the way something is grown and some people believe it's better for you with food.

From Wikipedia
"Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. Organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides but excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured (synthetic) fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, genetically modified organisms,[1] human sewage sludge, and nanomaterials"

It makes no difference to the properties in something grown this way, many people just don't like to ingest foods which have pesticides on them. They might also not want to buy anything that uses pesticides etc as they don't agree with it being used. Otherwise, there is little/no difference.

I have been out today and bought virgin coconut oil which is by Tiana organic fair trade extra virgin, so I have washed my hair in baby shampoo left it damp and soaked it in coconut oil. Its pretty greasy, can I still use bleach on it tomorrow or will it need washing on and a little oil combing through ????

p;s also had a couple of spoonfuls as on the back of the jar it suggested buttering toast and adding marmalade to it  *stars*

*thx*

Don't wash your hair.  Just apply the bleach straight over top of the coconut oil.

This is likely a very stupid question and I apologise - can your hair be tied back when you have the coconut oil in or does it need to be wrapped in anything i.e cling film or does it just really not matter? lol I'm going to put this through my hair as soon as I finish work but I need to clean the ferrets and things so would probably need it tied back : if it can't be I can just wait till after lol

To keep it warm and stop it getting hard, I'd say it's always best to put cling film around your head.

You could go shopping if you don't mind people looking at a greasy coconut oil head! I do the housework with it in cling film and the heat really makes it work into the hair. I also put it in damp hair and I think its made my hair a little lighter after using it for a few days. Im going to bleach it this weekend so will update with pics.

Thanks 🙂 I wrapped it in cling film which the ferrets thought was a nice new thing to try and scratch at...lovely little things! It doesn't seem to come out as soft as I was expecting but maybe I didn't use enough, oh well plenty more to use again 😀

My hair hates coconut, it always comes out feeling worse (apart from using it for bleaching). If yours is like mine, be careful as it took me a few weeks to get it back to normal a couple of times.

It was all right I just found that egg yolks and mayonnaise has a nicer result for me but I'm sure I will try again
