I used this last night and there is very little damage to my hair after shoving a load of 30 vol on it. Usually my hair is really bad and takes months to get back into shape.

Thank you SO much for this thread...I sat and read through (nearly ;)) the whole thread before I did my last bleaching (last weekend)

I am a chicken so I'm scared of the 'mix it yourself' bleaches you can buy, so I have always used the Pre Lightener+ box kit from Garnier.  I can't say for certain whether the oil made it work faster (atomic pink AND directions plum: say no more!) but it left my hair in so much better condition than previous bleaches.  *yay*

I'm not really giving any additional information on the topic, I just thought I'd join in with some more praise of this method!  Coconut oil is a winner!!!  *1*

*thx*

I have heard so many good reviews about coconut oil for general health, and it was recommended to me got my skin also. I am definitely going to go out and get some after all your wonderful reviews. I also find I occasionally get scabs on my head when i bleach so fingers crossed this time it won't be as bad. Anything to limit damage is worth a try. Thank you for giving me the information to make an informed decision

This is a bit gross but my skin on my chin has been dry and spotty, put this stuff on last night and it's loads better!

Not gross at all! Coconut oil has become my moisturizer of choice over the last year.  I still use a heavy emollient on my legs and arms at night in the winter to combat the eczema rashes... but for everything else, I slather up in coconut oil directly after my shower and my skin is so soft!  Plus, I know exactly what's in it.  Besides, it sure brightens up my tattoo ink.  😀

ModifiedMomma, I noticed my ink looks more vibrant with coconut oil too! I also used to use a coconut body butter which had the same effect! 🙂 I go through so much coconut oil because I use it on everything haha.

I've done the coconut thing for over a year now (since learning of it on LHC), every time I've used anything with peroxide, and it's great - it really does protect from damage! 🙂

Some recommended using virgin coconut oil only, but I must say I haven't noticed any difference whether using virgin or just "ordinary" pure coconut oil.

Hi folks.
I found this forum after searching for info on coconut oil and how it helps to limit hair damage before bleaching.

I have been henna'ring my hair for four years now and wanted to lift some of the colour as repeated applications made it go a bit too dark for my liking, despite doing only root touch ups for the last few years. There is always an overlap with the existing henna though as I can't exactly see what I'm doing when I slap it on (I'm virtually blind). Hence, my hair goes gradually darker than I'd like over the years. So, I wanted to try bleaching to lighten the colour but was wary of the damage it has previously caused in my misspent youth, and didn't want that again.

After reading this thread I was reassured ... so I bought some raw coconut oil from Tesco, slapped it on for an hour (literally slathered it, I was saturated and so was everything else I came into contact with !), fought my guide dog off (who wanted to lick my hair !), and after a strand test revealed the colour I wanted (sort of reddish orange I suppose, not very subtle but that's me) I went at it with the Tesco bought JR highlight kit.
Forty minutes later I had mottled fingers (can't feel what I'm doing through gloves 😉 ) and bright red very frequent highlights in the top layer of my barnet (and unfortunately a very blonde patch on the top of my head where I'd accidentally got it on my virgin roots. Ooops. Easily corrected though with more henna.) And a very blonde streak in my fringe, as that bit has grown in white for the last ten years and was always going to go a lighter colour. I have earmarked this streak for some funky colours with veggie dyes - flamingo pink maybe. Or I might give it a month or so and bleach that bit again, and go as near to white as possible, and dye it teal or blue. I'll see how I feel.

And I also have very very soft hair with absolutely no damage. None of the straw texture or tangles that I would have expected with bleach after previous uses years ago. It feels even better than when I started out, which is saying something because it was in pretty good nick to begin with ! I shed almost no hair when washing all the gunk out either, less than I would with a normal routine wash.

So I am a big coconut oil fan now and thank everyone who contributed to this thread for the info, as reading it put my mind at rest before jumping in. Top job guys !

Finally got hold of coconut oil, any tips for getting it out of the jar and applying it. It's rock solid!!

Stick it in warm water, or scoop some out with a spoon and put it in a bowl and micro for a few seconds. It melts at 23c so it doesn't take much 🙂 I always just run the hot water in the sink and put the jar in.

It will also melt in the warmth of your hand within a short time.  I usually scoop some out of my jar with a spoon and just hold it in my cupped hands for a minute, then I can work it around like a lotion.  Rubbing that between your palms will make it fully liquid quickly. 🙂

Forgot to use this last time and ended up with the worst bleach itches ever.
It was last week-a week after decolour remover and I used a box bleach instead of mixing my own like I usually do (preference extreme platinum with oil shot thingy).
I was in agony and my hair was awful afterwards despite it being a root jobby and a naughty pull-through for last five mins.
Needless to say I won't be making that mistake again as I spent the next day with coconut oil and clingfilm on my head for about 8 hours, then two days later a three hour k-pak reconstructor session finished with intense hydrator.

Feel free to slap my wrist for me as I really should know better!
