I discovered the coconut oil treatment trick here a few months ago and i gotta say, i am loving it!!
I have told all my girlfriends who bleach their hair and they cant believe how good it works!!
Coconut oil Rocks!
For bleaching tho, i find it best to leave it on overnight and then bleach in the morning.. my hair feels lovely and it definitely seems to speed up the development time of the bleach for me!
I used a lightening cream and developer to bleach my hair. I used coconut oil from root to tip the night before. My hair feels pretty strong and healthy after processing! Though my scalp is still itchy. π Just rubbing more oil on it now to help soothe it...
I have already posted this in the General Hair Chat section, but I want to ask you guys, the coconut oil specialists ;), this too. I have read about other people encountering the same problem?
I've been box dying my hair the same colour for years now, and 6 weeks ago I tried dying on top of coconot oil for the first time. It worked like a charm, my hair felt really healthy. The only downside was that my bright copper turned into a dark coppery brown. Too dull for my taste!
Is there a way to prevent the colour from going dark? Is this a matter of leaving it in for a shorter period of time? (i left it in for about 40 mins) Or a stronger bleach (i used 20 vol, which usually does the trick)? I don't really want to use 30 vol or more but if that is the solution I might use it once to make the colour pop again.
Comparison: The first picture is the bright copper my hair always was (and some Directions Rose Red and Plum), the second picture is the way it turned out the last time, brownish. (and some faded Directions Poppy Red and Dark Tulip at the ends)
Thanks!
No idea I'm afraid. But it could be a coincidence. Maybe the dye has changed formula? It could be a lot of things, it may not be the coconut oil.
But as I pretty much never use box dye I don't know if it could affect the outcome in this way.
It is possible that the coconut oil prevents some of the colour depositing. Seems unlikely, but I guess it's possible. But it could be that your hair is damaged and not taking up the colour well. If you're using the dye all over every time, that could well be the culprit.
Maybe you'd be better off bleach bathing with coconut oil, then using semi dyes.
Ah yes, valid point. It might prevent colour depositing. Hadn't thought of that! And no, I only use it on my roots once every 10-12 weeks. So virgin hair! My natural colour is blondish, so 20vol has always been enough. I could try 30vol once, to see if it helps.
Theodora says on page 4 of this thread "it works with all conventional box dyes to protect from peroxide damage. I have used coconut oil under a Nice n Easy semi perm (medium ash blonde) and the dye uptake was even better than on my test strands without the oil (that was my first dabble with coconut oil under dyes so I was still skeptical and did strand tests). It actually took so well that I thought it looked too dark and ended up removing it with Colour B4."
So I guess it might be the coconut oil? They totally could have changed the formula of course. But this feels like a puzzle I need to solve, haha!
hey im back again, this may seem silly to ask but can you do the coconut oil treatment with a bleach bath?
^Yup! π
I definitely need to try this since I embarking on a journey from dark brown to ash blonde. Trouble is.... In Germany we never have any of these oils readily available, and if we do, we pay out the... You know what. I'll have to take a previous poster's advice and check out either our Asian markets or Halal shops.
Best of luck you Bleaching Beauties!
You can definitely get it from Edeka, Rewe and Dornseifer, though it's 4β¬ for a small jar :/
Hm, I'll have to check out Rewe again. Maybe Berlin will have more shops than Potsdam.
Danke!
We have it in my small town haha, so you should be able to find it - it's a small jar with a blue/turquoise label.
Kein Ding π
ok so i bleach bathed my hair with this using a 20 developer and blue bleach, it came out really orange and i had some directions and manic panic toner sitting around, i didnt want it to completely tone it out since im going pink and the oranges will go well with the dye, but it actually managed to tone out all of the orange and the yellows at the roots and make an even colour all around, which is weird since its only made to tone yellows, but im happy with it so far it will be a great base for my directions flamingo pink.
its also still super shiny and soft with a bit of drying but thats understandable and can be fixed in a giffy, but my problem is there is a mass build up of oils at my roots from all of this and i was wondering if i should just go ahead and dye over it or remove it?
my hair at a current.
If you are dying it the flamingo pink, remove the oils first and don't condition. Give your hair a good shampoo then dye and after dying you can condition your hair if it needs it as flamingo pink will help condition your hair too. The oil will block the dye from taking to your hair properly as the veggie dyes work as a stain on your hair.
Thanks so much kittylost, i thought so to but seeing as some peoples discriptions of dying there hair are kinda hard to follow i thought i would trust in you guys to help C:
this is how it turned out C: i had to wash i once since it was very purpley and i wanted it more pinkish and i love how it turned out, thanks for everyone help, as you can see my hair still has its wave meaning my hair is still healthy C:
will be using coconut oil again in the future
sorry about the horrible lighting in my room at night XD
