Coconut oil to prevent damage from peroxide/bleach

Same as bunny, coconut oil is amazing! I BBed yesterday onto partially colored hair (I had used Colour B4 about a week before with 2 shampoos in between) with about 3 cm of natural roots. I used 30 vol for an hour, and my hair is in great shape and it really protected my scalp.

I put it on about 3 hours before the BB and kept my head warm with a towel (which also allowed me to soak up part of the excess oil that was dripping everywhere!) It has now become a must do in case of bleaching!

I totally slathered it onto bone dry and clarified hair,

You washed your hair before hand?

Forgive me if I misread that, but... Don't do that. You need all the dirt on your scalp as possible. You need to bleach on hair that hasn't been washed for a couple of days AT LEAST. The longer you can leave it the better.

I will also add, I wouldn't recommend anyone use bleach if their hair is feeling damaged. But I'm glad yours came out ok πŸ™‚

Ha I wouldn't recommend anyone bleach hair as damaged as mine either, if you're bothered about the condition of your hair whatsoever! I'm basically pretty happy if mine goes like straw as long as it doesn't fall out. I've been bleaching for about a decade and know my hair's limits, and I'm not too bothered about damage - I am constantly nacking my hair with backcoming, beehives, curling etc. I was just very impressed that the coconut oil definitely helped my hair tolerate the bleach without any further damage whatsoever; very unexpected!

I didn't bleach on dirty hair as I wasn't going near my (massive) roots or scalp. Slap on wrist I know! I had been ill with a grotty cold all week and stank and couldn't resist a good scrub!

But yeah, do it by the book kids!  πŸ™‚

I'm using a Feria dye tomorrow and it says on the instructions to put it on wet unwashed hair, so when should I put the coconut oil on?
Should I put it on before I go to bed, then sleep with it on and then wet it before I dye it or another time?

You can put it on any time before the colour--as long as it's a half an hour before it should be fine.

I wonder if the coconut oil would be enough to count as wet? I wonder why they say wet hair, what's the difference?

Wet hair would just water it down. You could wet the hair before a semi/demi to make it not last as long. Maybe the dye might stain? I did a quick search and couldn't find a Feria version that says wet hair.

I ended up coconut oiling all night and then just wetting my hair before I dyed because it said that the dye should be applied to "wet, unwashed hair".
I put it on towel-dried hair as applying to dye to dripping wet hair is just stupid and of course it would dilute it.

The colour's come out lovely (see my avatar) and my hair feels really soft πŸ™‚

Can you put coconut oil on hair that will be lightened with Loreal Hilights Magenta and Red? If I do use this brand I would use maybe 20 Volume & 10 Volume peroxide. 20 Volume brings my level 7 to light banana yellow. I haven't figured out if the Perm dye is as strong. Thank You, I am sorry if it is answered elsewhere with other specific permanent colors. I don't wish to mess up πŸ™‚

You can use it with any peroxide based treatment, as the peroxide will cut through the oil.

Permanent dyes/bleach/demis ... any peroxide based treatment should always be done on oily, unwashed hair.

I did half of my roots today with L'oreal HiColor HiLights Magenta over top of coconut oil and had great success the color came out perfect.  Since I have blonde hair naturally my Magenta looks super Hot Pink/Red  πŸ˜‰

ok so i live in australia and ive been looking for coconut oil for ages, its so difficult to find and i was either about to give up and buy some online or use argan oil, but argan oil is pretty expensive over here. until my mum suggested i look at an asia grocer we buys things we cant find anywhere else from and i found it basically instantly. now it says pure coconut oil it doesnt smell like coconut much and it was floaty coconut bits in it i was wondering if that was ok? or if i would have to sift them out?

It probably wouldn't be, and at this time of year there (getting into summer) it definitely wouldn't be. Coconut oil is solid until about 23 degrees C and turns to liquid. It's possible if it's about that temp there now, that the lumps are unmelted bits floating.
