If it's in the pharmacy, look in the skin care section as that's what it's most often used for in a health and beauty sense.
Health food stores will often carry pure coconut oil as well.
Or they have it in the healthy cooking areas, with gluten free stuff
Or just on eBay? I bought mine on there.
Bleach bathed again today, hair feels wonderful, toned for 5 hours, almost at white!
Oh I'm going to try this just spent Β£18 on bleach in Sallys hehe. Sorry if this sounds dumb but I want to make sure I've got this all right before I bleach!
1. Shampoo if you have product build up.
2. Apply 100% coconut oil all over where you're going to bleach. (My mum cooks with the oil so we have about 10 tubs of in it the house. π )
Question, can I put it on my already bleached hair even if I'm not bleaching it to give some moisture? I'm bleaching my roots and some additional streaks of dark hair.
3.Wait at least 1 hour to longer to better?
4.DON'T rise out and apply your bleach normally. If solidified blast with hair dryer until liquid state again?
5. Wait normal time for my hair type, and rise out like and condition or dye like normal?
Also, sorry for all the questions Iβm really noobie atm. π Is it better to wait before dying or dye straight after? Iβve done both and havenβt seen a big difference tbh. The only thing is that I feel much better about conditioning it, rather than when I donβt wait and have to blow dry the bleached hair it feels like straw. D:
Okay so first off, if you're going to bleach your roots, you want them to be kind of oily to protect your scalp so it's better to leave time between shampooing and bleaching. What I said about clarifying to remove build-up applies to wear you'd have applied lots of conditioner/styling products, which is usually (for most people) mid-lengths to ends, (you probably don't have product build-up on your roots!).
You're right about not rinsing and using a hair dryer in case the oil solidifies.
You should dye straight after bleaching as the porosity in your hair will be at its maximum and your hair will absorb the dye much better. if you're applying coconut oil to your whole hair and not bleaching it all, you should shampoo the oil off before you apply the dye or else it won't take to your hair as the oil will keep it from entering it.
Bleach baths are great for gradual lightening but in your case I think you should probably do a full bleach for your roots (since they're virgin), being very very careful to not overlap and put it on any hair that has already been bleached. Use 30vol, not 40, unless you want your scalp to suffer.
Okay gotcha thanks! I only use heat protectant anyway.
Ah I see I'd only only to oil to where I'm going to bleach and where I already have bleached hair. However it's not badly faded so I'd just wash it out. Thanks, I know to dye straight after. π
Ah yeah I read that soon after about the bleach baths. No I always use 30vol, even that hurts sometimes hehe. Thanks for your help I'll be trying this Sunday. π
Hey one more thing. Do I need to blowdry the hair as soon as it solidifies? My house is cold and since all this snow it's colder. Or do I just need to blowdry it when I need to rinse? Thank you!
Okay so what I would do would be to blast it all with a hairdryer once you've just finished applying it, then cover it in cling film, a shower cap, a hat or a towel, basically try and keep your head warm. The heat allows coconut oil to penetrate the hair cortex. Then you should blow dry just before applying the bleach as it is much harder to apply bleach to solidified coconut oil. You might need to keep the blowdryer next to you if your house is very cold and melt the coconut oil as you get along.
So I might have missed out something over the 15 pages of this thread (!) but can you use coconut oil and then use a box bleach rather than mixing up powder/peroxide? I used L'oreal Maximum Blonde last time on my hair, and it worked better (ie more lightening effect) than 30%vol bleach with much less damage. Although I was stripping purple out to go blue, but the effing blue that I picked came out practically the same shade as the purple I had on before. So I want to strip this out again and go more turquoise this time, the coconut oil sounds like a great product, but I definitely want to use the box bleach rather than peroxide, does anyone know if this would this still work?
Yep the last time I used it it was under an XXL Live Platinum box lightener. Worked fine. Coconut oil can be used under bleach but also box dyes as it protects from both bleach and peroxide damage.
Awesome, thanks for the help Theo, I shall give this a go and hopefully it will help just as mush as it has for everyone else who has tried it!
Hopefully it will.
Good luck with it, and try to keep the coconut oil to soak as long as possible and use a little bit of heat to help it soak deeper.
ahh people should eat Virgin Coconut Oil, that stuff is amazing on so many levels for your health (and your hair) and there's all sorts of scientific stuff about it. I'm glad other people are realising the benefits of this magical stuff!
My cat likes to eat this stuff. I put some on today and he tried to eat my hair bless him π
We've been using it in curries recently. But you go through it far too quickly. Cant afford to use it on a regular basis!
