Can't get the brassy orange out!!!

Hello everyone! I am attempting to balayage my hair for the third time. I'll provide a little history to illustrate why it's going so poorly this time (as opposed to earlier.)

1. Three years ago, I used a Revlon Frost and Glo kit to lighten my ends using a method I found online. It worked really well as my hair was virgin and totally undamaged at the time. There was a little bit of brassiness, but as the summer wore on, it got lighter in the sun and looked nice.

2. 9 months later, I had my hair dyed to a deep burgundy red. I have a family member who does hair professionally (but not balayage or ombre, hence the reason I'm attempting it myself.) She only charged me for the supplies, which was pretty nice because my hair was very long at the time and it took forever!

3. I go on a boxed dye frenzy when I try to get that red out of my hair! Literally so many different attempts! Hair gets frazzled, I chop it off to a chin length bob, and BAM! Start dying it again! (What is wrong with me?!)

4. My hair is now just over my collarbone, and I attempted to do a baby light/balayage process that I found on youtube. OF COURSE, it didn't turn out. I was left with two giant orange spots framing my face, and one awkward off center patch in the back. I bought permanent dye in my own color and covered up the travesty in the back. The front however, I liked the actual fade and shape of but NOT the terrible copper glow.

Okay, that brings me to my current predicament:
After much panicked reviewing, I decided to try the Wella toners in colors T14 and T18 (mixed with the Wella 30 developer.) I also mixed in a packet of Ardell "Unred" just for good measure. I left it on for the full 30 minutes because the girl at the store said that it takes longer with dark hair... So, upon rinsing it out, my hair looks slightly better, but it's still definitely an awkward orange color (that looks awful with my skin tone, btw.) I think I need to tone it again, and start from the top this time (instead of working my way up from the bottom.) How long do I have to wait before I tone it again??

Thank you in advance!!

T14 and t18 just aren't made for orange tones. They only work on yellows. The person that told you to leave it on for longer because it takes longer on darker hair is stupid and wrong. I'm not fully convinced by the Unred thing either, bt it's not likely to work on strong orange tones anyway.

Also, 30 volume is way, way too strong to use with a toner! Never do that again, please! They are very strong with ammonia so very damaging as it is, using 30 vol peroxide as well is a bad idea. The strongest you need is 10%.

These blooming wella timers are the bane of my online life as the advice around them is horrible online (youtubers im looking at you), so we get to deal with the fallout πŸ™

For orange tones, you need a blue toner. The wella toners you used are purple based and it only works on yellow as I mentioned before. The best way is to use direct dyes and mix your own. A good one is directions neon blue as it's purple based so still works partially on the yellow but has a greater affect on the orange. Then you mix a tiny amount in cheap white conditioner. Yes, you will need to top it up as it's not permanent, but the wella toners aren't either (they fade) and they're a lot more damaging than some conditioner πŸ™‚ The best way to keep on top of any fade is mix an even timer amount of the blue into your normal conditioner and it'll top up every time you wash.

It's not going to give you blonde, hopefully you realise that.
