Can I change a 40 vol kit to 20 vol?

I got a free 40 vol directions kit, but my hair is purple, bleached underneath and I don't think I need bleach that strong. Last time I used 40 volume it burned my skin, and I also got burns all over my arms, I'm very messy at dying  :D! So I was wondering if there was a way to turn my 40 vol into 20 vol maybe with water or conditioner or something?

I would suggest using the bleach powder but just buying some 20 developer. Developer is cheap and 40 vol is so harsh I feel it's not worth the risk.

However it would be possible to dilute it with shampoo.

You can dilute 40 vol to 20 vol using 50/50 developer+water. I have been doing this for years, it was common practice in salon if we ran out of lower volumes

Thank you both for your replies. I've been looking online to try and buy some developer and bleach powder, but I'm a little confused by all of the products about there. I'm not really sure what to get. I figured if I was going to buy some developer, I might as well just buy bleach powder as I need two bleach kits because of the length of my hair.

I was looking at this website http://www.coolblades.co.uk/hair-colour/peroxide-developer/index2.html.

Is there a product you can recommend or suggest?

Wella Blondor or Schwarzkopf Blonde Me are used by a lot of people; you can use any brand of developer. πŸ™‚
