Can I achieve blonde with bleach baths only?

I have recently had my hair cut into a mohawk, shaved number 3 at the sides, and about 6 inches in length on top, and half that length at the crown and back (stay with me, it's relevant!) Before getting it cut it was dyed ginger but still had some red at the ends from a previous dye, and around 1 1/2 inch of natural root showing (natural hair is medium brown). After getting my long hair chopped off into my current style I dyed it all a burgundy colour. This was 4 weeks ago.

Yesterday I used Colour B4 to remove all the dye from my hair. It's left me with a gingery-strawberry blonde colour - see attached pic, excuse the serial killer eyes - which is ever-so-slightly lighter on the shaved sides and roots, probably because those parts have only ever had one dye on top (the burgundy). I would like to go blonde and after learning my lesson the hard way 3 years ago (I bleached the hell out of it from XXL Red Passion, it unsurprisingly went white, yellow, orange all the way down my hair, I dyed it a medium brown which went ginger, bleached the hell out of that, tried to cover it up with red, it went pink, dyed it brown and chopped it all off - ugh) I want to take my time.

I want to do it sloooowly. So I've been reading your bleach bath tutorial and thinking this might be the best way. Would it be possible to eventually get to blonde this way or is pure bleaching at some stage the only way? I really don't mind going slowly. I've learnt my lesson and patience is key. Plus I'll be getting it cut often to keep it healthy and maintain my current style. I'm also wondering how I go about it due to the different lengths in my hair. The top is going to be the hardest to lift but the sides should take pretty quickly, so would I start the bleach bath on the top and back first, then do the sides? I learnt the last time that my hair is prone to copper tones when bleaching. And what stage in the process should I start using a toner? When I've got to a light-ish blonde stage or further ahead than that? Can I use anything in the awkward in-between stages?

Thanks for reading!

It is certainly possible to achieve blonde with bleach baths only.

One issue that you may face is that your hair lengths may be stained from multiple applications of dark dye, if they are then a full bleach won't take the colour out either and you'll have to wait until you cut them off.

The first thing you should do is use another colour remover as it looks like there is still a lot of permanent dye in your hair. You could try a different brand such as decolour remover which some people have better results with. Make sure your hair is squeaky clean before using it and make sure to rinse for long enough.

Then, after waiting at least a week you can start to bleach bathe your hair. Applying to the longer parts first sounds like a good idea.

Pre made toners are typically made for very light hair and won't work until you already have pale blonde hair. However you can mix your own toners out of blue semi dye and conditioner to tone down orange tones between bleach baths.

Thanks for replying Marthakins.

Is Colour B4 and Decolour Remover both by Scott Cornwall? Is there any difference between them or is it just that people experiencing better results with the latter? I definitely think you're right about doing another. I feel like the front still may have a bit of dye in.

Is there a particular blue semi dye that you would recommend? I read earlier that blue-based toners are better for counteracting orange tones, and purple-based is good for yellow, but when looking on Amazon, most seemed to be violet/purple. What good blue-based toners are there? There isn't a Sally's near me, which I've read a lot about on here.

Color b4 claims to shrink and remove molecules, and decolor remover says it shatters the molecules and then removes them. I have had good results with color b4 extra strength in removing permanent black buildup of 5 years. I did have to do 3 treatments though.

You need a blue based toner just now as there's definitely orange in your hair. Something like directions neon blue would work diluted.
There's really not much point buying a pre made toner, you'll get better results mixing our own and it's cheaper too!

Thank you. How much of the neon blue should I mix with conditioner? Sorry for all the questions! I need hand-holding through it all!

Puerkz, I used Extra Strength but only once, so will definitely see if the local chemist stocks either otherwise I'll pop into town later in the week.

Just had a haircut and had loads of the front, back and top cut off. So it's now a pixie cut rather than a mohawk. The top and crown is still completely ginger though so I'm going to do another ColourB4 (it was £5 cheaper than Decolour Remover) to ensure any leftover dye is gone.

Then I'll do my first bleach bath in a week.

I'm really unsure though how I'm going to bleach bath my hair somewhat evenly when the sides and nape are completely virgin hair now. But all the rest is ginger from my previous permanent dye job. Am I going to end with yellowy-orange on top and white back and sides?

If you need another colour remover shops like Savers and B&Ms usually stock JoBazz or Pro:Voke for less than a fiver, I have used both and they are just as good as the big name brands.

Thanks but there's no Savers or B&M round here! Only Superdrug and Boots. They're opposite one another so I usually check who's selling what the cheapest before buying. Superdrug seem to have some good offers on at the mo. I'm all stocked up for a future bleach bath (once my online deliveries arrive) but still clueless as to HOW I'm actually going to apply it on this new haircut to ensure even lifting.

Currently sitting with my head wrapped in clingfilm and saturated in ColourB4. Fingers crossed it gets rid of any red dyes still lurking in there.
