Blonde color that wont go yellow/brassy soon?

Hi, I have dark brown hair which has been treated before with bleach(a year ago) and different colors, but most of that's faded away now, so it's really dark brown-ish.. anyway since I have fair skin I want to get some lighter color, maybe some nice dark ash or honey blonde. I would like to get highlights, but I think, since they would just bleach highlight my hair and then put some toner(btw not real toner like you guys use but I dunno it makes it look good at first), but I think that would go yellow soon, right?
So how to get nice blonde color that wont go yellow soon, but not just by bleaching and coloring it because that would look unnatural? If I put highlights first and then add some blonde hair color on it, would that go yellow/orange soon too?

The going yellow is just the toner washing out. Get some purple shampoo and it'll keep the yellow at bay.

The bit about highlights and then adding blonde hair colour, I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean.

Thank your for your answer!

I've used purple shampoo before but it didn't help me much, probably because I didn't leave it long enough tough..
Well what I tought was, to get highlights on my hair and then dye it blonde with some hair color, but not leave the color for too long..I thought that maybe it would be a nice look.. Is that now even possible, I'm sorry I dont know much about these things..

I have one more question, brassiness-wise, is it much harder for us with natural dark hair to maintain blonde color, or is it just as hard for those with lighter hair?I'm asking this because I'm trying to decide if dyeing my hair into some sort of blonde is a smart move for me.

I think I understand what you mean, I think you mean pre-lightening then using a permanent blonde dye over that? I know that some blonde permanent dyes that you buy in the shops (we tend to call them 'box dyes') advise that you pre-lighten very dark hair first to allow the dye to work because blonde box dyes only lift your natural colour a certain amount.

Permanent hair dyes work in 2 ways, they lift or lighten your hair and they deposit a tint, when the hair dye fades (or if you use a colour remover ) you will see the colour your hair was lifted to by the dye (your hair cannot go back to it's natural colour from being lightened, but no tint in a hair dye is truly permanent so you will always get some fade back to the colour your hair was lightened to by the dye. )

It's not that it is more difficult for dark hair to maintain the tint of blonde dyes, but it is more likely for dark hair to be lightened to a brassy colour as hair lightens through specific stages; dark to red to orange to yellow to blonde, if the dye you have used doesn't have much strength in lifting your natural colour past say, orange then even if the tint tones the orange at first it will look brassier as it fades than someone who's hair lightened more easily. This is why a lot of blonde box dyes don't advise that you use them on very dark hair.

The problem with bleaching highlights in and then using a permanent dye over the top is that you will be using peroxide /developer twice in a short space of time, this will mean that your hair becomes more damaged and colours will fade more quickly. My natural colour is quite light though so I have never had to pre-lighten before using a box dye so there may be other people on here who have that could advise you better on how that went for them.

Basically for any blonde to stay looking good you will need to tone it regularly either with a purple shampoo or by mixing a toner with conditioner and a small amount of purple direct dye (the type like directions or adore etc). Using toners that you have to mix with peroxide will just keep damaging your hair so will last less and less time as you keep using them.

As I have gotten older my hair has gone quickly from white blonde when I was 4-5 years old to now being quite a dark brown at the ripe old age of almost 27, lol. So I know the struggle of trying to keep blonde over dark hair, and with all my failed attempts I have found that for me personally I have to pre-lighten.

Now when I do it I don't just do highlights I do my whole head because I naturally have some lighter and darker bits to my hair so when I bleach the light bits go lighter and so its more of my "natural highlights" showing through. If I were you I would say to get the color you want you would have to bleach everything and the only reason I say bleach everything is that if you put a permanent color over top the parts that were not highlighted they are going to be crazy brassy and you will have what I like to call the "not-so-pretty strawberry blonde brassy mess". And trust me its not cute, been there done that and I hated it!

I think if you bleach it all and then pick a nice semi permanent dye in the blonde range you will get more of what your looking for and hopefully avoid the nasty orange-strawberry brassy mess. But this is just my opinion if you truly want strictly highlights then just bleach the highlights and then leave it alone but it sounds like you want to over all lighten and that wont happen nicely without bleach.

Ah good call Emmer, I didn't get the bit about highlighting then using a permanent dye over everything, yes if you did that the bits you didn't highlight would go brassier.

Also, a honey blonde would be easier to get to from dark hair as an ash blonde would need to have the brassiness kept to a minimum a lot more. (my mum dyes her hair ash blonde with a permanent dye from her natural colour of mid ash brown and it still goes brassy after a while!)

Yea it is a struggle to get naturally darker hair to go light with just a permanent color and developer, I've tried I feel like everything on my hair and the only thing that has worked has been bleaching first then adding a semi or demi-permanent color after. I even had my mom mix up a cocktail of khaki green and ash blonde and after about 3 weeks it still turned brassy!! Its such a pain in the rear!
