Hey all,
So my other half has natural virgin black hair - I’d say closest to shade 1 *gulp* and has decided he would like to try out a magenta pink. I’m thinking Special Effects Virgin Rose.
This is not my first time dyeing but I haven’t done it for several years. I’m naturally a shade 3-4 and have been many many shades of the rainbow (lilac, turquoise, red, orange, magenta, ginger etc) that required bleaching to achieve but I’m guessing that the extra few shades and how bright it needs to go to get a decent magenta are going to up the difficulty curve significantly.
What vol developer would you guys recommend for this? I’m happy to gradually bleach bath with conditioner and he’s okay with being ginger for a bit. Is there anything else I need to think about? Is there any shiny new products that have come out in the last few years that save your hair?
*thx*
I'm so sorry to take so long to answer this, hopefully it's not too late!
The good news is, pale ginger is good enough for magenta! It's surprising, but magenta is actually a very strong colour and can hide a multitude of sins! Even on super uneven hair it will often look great.
Don't use above a 30vol developer, NEVER use above a 30 in fact. Hair that dark might not even need more than 20, but it's hard to tell without a strand test. So natural hair pigment is made up of red and yellow (lots of red is warm and lots of yellow is cool toned). If there's not a lot of red in his hair, but a LOT of yellow like I have (I have very dark brown, ash/cool toned hair), then it might only take a few minutes to get to yellow even though it's very dark (this is pretty unusual though). For example, I'm always aiming for pale yellow, but by the time I've worked up the back of my head with 30 vol it's already at the mid to dark yellow stage. You wouldn't want that, there's no reason to cause more damage than you need to, so it would be better to use 20 or even 10 vol. If there's a lot of red in his hair then it could need the 30 vol to get to ginger.
I don't think there's really any miracle products to help really. I'm not wildly convinced by Olaplex even! Personally, I still think a good protein product for after the beaching is best. If my hair is in a pretty good condition Joico KPak Reconstrutor is great and it's becoming a lot more available now.
