its my first time lightening my hair on my own. i had it bleached in a salon 5 weeks ago and it didnt get pale enough and it had green and red banding because of previous veg dye. i died over it with purple haze without diluting and i have been fading my hair. i have gotten rid of almost all the green and the remaining color doesnt bother me anyways. it still has a little bit of pinkness, and i have dark brown natural roots.so my question is how i should do my roots? should i just do the bleach bath all over my head so the roots will get lighter quickly and even up with the rest? or would i get white roots and orengy hair? and also should i try to fade it more?
I was going to answer this differently, but after looking at your hair I reconsidered. Someone else may have a different or better suggestion. Firstly, it's impossible to say at what speed your different sections will process without a strand test, however, since your hair is so long and full and you are not enlisting the help of a salon I would suggest doing an all-over bleach bath, applied quickly (but thoroughly) and kept covered and warm so as to have as uniform processing as possible. I would then wait a week and carefully bleach bathe whichever portion of your hair was darker until the color matched the rest of the hair and then wash out. You may need to do this step in multiple sessions of one section of your head at a time if you plan to do it yourself as it will be even more time-consuming considering your length and amount of hair you have to work with. I'm not sure how light you are planning on going but generally you can expect 1/2 to 1 1/2 levels of lift with a bleach bath. If you have tried multiple methods of fading your red and it is no longer budging, I suggest trying a color remover (remover, not stripper) to help get rid of the remaining color before bleach bathing.
i did a bleach bath already after i posted this and i feel like the red is almost completely gone but i have mint to green parts. the rest seems fairly uniform and definetely orange. my boyfriend called me a carrot the other day! but i am patient and i want pastel purple and i know it is hard but is it impossible? i can even go pastel purple with greeny bits if there is staining there. eventually i am going to cut it short anyways.
and unfurtunately i cant find a color remover where i live. i have found some strippers or removers online but they are way too expensive.
Pastels are not impossible but it can take some time to get your hair light enough so your patience should serve you well. Hair should be a very light yellow (like the inside of a banana peel) to attempt pastels. Slowly lightening with bleach baths is a good choice and less damaging than bleaching. If your hair is in good condition you can do them every week or two. I think by the time you are light enough for a pastel the green should be long gone. If it is bothering you in the meantime you can tone it out by using a red semi-permanent (vegetable) dye heavily diluted in conditioner to make it a neutral color since opposite colors create a neutral shade. You can also use this technique on your orange by using a heavily diluted blue. Keep in mind it will be removed when you do another bleach bath, though. I didn't ask before if you have ever used a permanent color on any of your current hair, but if you had I would suggest using a sulfite-based color remover before any more bleach baths as it will help get you lighter faster and with a more even result.
no i have never used a permenent color and the green is not bothering me i like it a little 😀 but i want it gone eventually. thanks for helping me out!
You're welcome! Best of luck! Keep us updated with your progress! 🙂
so i did another bleach bath and i used more mixture this time so it was covered very nicely and although i did my roots last they got a lot brighter. now i have ver pale yellow roots with golden lenghts and green parts in the middle.but it looks a little darker in the pictures. and because i am a vampire yellow makes me look horrible. i will be going to school with a bandana for a week i guess.
soo i need another bleach bath right? or maybe 2? i am a little worried about the roots i dont know how i can keep them away from the bleach.
Orange or yellow colors can be toned with a small amount of semi-permanent dye in conditioner. Blue works for orange, violet for gold, purple for yellow, and so on. If you take a picture of your hair and make the picture a negative in a photo editing program it will show you what dye you need to tone what color. This will make your hair look more natural and you won't have to hide it behind a bandana. You only need a very, very small amount mixed into conditioner but you will have to test it on your hair to see exactly how light or dark it needs to be. You should be able to tone it to a light brown/ dark blonde-ish shade until you bleach again.
From your photos most of your hair looks to be around a level 6 and you need to be at a level 9/ 10 in the hair levels system. I don't have a picture to explain but if you type "hair color levels" into a search engine you will see charts explaining the levels. You will probably need at least three bleach baths and possibly more to get light enough for true pastels. As for your roots, you will need to avoid getting bleach/ bleach bath mix on them as much as possible, especially if they are at a level 10 (they look more like a 7/8 on my monitor but I read that you said they appeared darker in the photo.) You will have to section your hair and use a tint brush so that you can apply the mix just shy of your roots and be careful not to overlap. You will most likely have to do this one half or even one quarter of your head at a time as I described before. If I may ask, is there any reason you are reluctant to do a regular bleach? If your hair is in good condition it would probably be an easier option for you.
i didnt know how my light my hair would get so i didnt want to risk it with a full bleach because i have never done this by myself before. but i have a friend who is helping me and she is pretty good at spreading the mixture on my head. maybe i could do a full bleach next time? but how long should i keep it on? i dont want to fry my hair. my hair look good right now i got it trimmed last week and i have been taking care of it but i dont know.
also i tried to tone it with some blue dye and very little purple dye and it did nothing. i dont want to waste any more dye because i barrowed my sisters blue dye so i am just gonna bare the orange for a week.
and if i do a regular bleach do you think my hair would get light enough at one time? i dont wanna heve to wait a month to get pastel purple 😀
Try a strand test to see if you can get the colour you need with one bleach. Keep it covered so it doesn't dry out or get cold.
It also may be worth trying a colour remover, often they are more effective after a bleach/bleach bath has opened the cuticle.
unfurtunately i can not find a color remover where i live except for some online ones and they are for professional use so they are like 2 liters and very expensive. (plus my cat just had surgery so i am broke). i have been washing my hair with head and shoulders and doing hot oil treatments and it has faded the green a lot but i am not sure if the ends are darker because they were cold or because they have some dye on them. (i have only used semi permanent dies)
Semi-permanent reds can stain so it's possible that this happened to your ends, but if you had the red somewhere else and it's already gone I'd say it's just that your hair was colder there when you bleach bathed it and that it just didn't develop as much as the rest of your hair.
I should have pointed this out sooner but it can take months to get hair light enough for pastel colors. Some people can never achieve them, or worse, some people achieve them by overprocessing their hair and then have severe damage and have to cut all of it off. I suggest following Wicked Pixie's advice. Wait a week and do a strand test with a regular bleach mixture. Try using a 20 volume developer and a good quality bleach. Make sure you keep the strand warm while it develops. At the end of the recommended processing time or when you reach pale blonde (whichever comes first) wash and dry the strand and evaluate the condition. Is it brittle? Was it gummy while it was wet? If it is OK then you are good for a full bleach. If you aren't comfortable with the idea of a full bleach you will either have to continue with multiple bleach baths over whatever period of time it takes (maybe two months or more) or decide on a different color. You could do some purples and pinks over your current hair and they would be lovely if not pastel.
i did a strand test and i used 20 vol and just bleached it (not a bleach bath this time and kept it on for an hour) and it did not lift as much as i expected. i think my ends are stained from the red. my hair feels fine not gummy not horrible. it snaps when i pull only one hair but genarally it looks ok. i feel like it would take a pale purple maybe not as pastel but i am gonna dye it on sunday anyways. maybe i can dye the tips darker like a reverse obmbre? or maybe cut them off. i havent decided yet.
I would try a medium purple that will definitely cover and let it fade. Sometimes when the first purple application has toned it you can get away with a more pastel shade for further applications. Make sure you use a good purple though, one that will last reasonably well.
The reverse ombre is a great idea, I got the most compliments i have ever had for a colour when I had a lilac to purple gradient.
i have manic panic plum passion and rockabilly blue rigth now i was thinking about mixing them to get a blue based color do you think those would work?
