Hey guys!!
So I just tried to go red at a salon without bleaching but used a hi lift method and it didn't work! π
Now I've gotten all the stuff I need to do it myself, but was split on how to bleach my hair.
I'm not trying to go blonde really but light enough where my 'Rock and Roll Red' by Manic Panic will show up on my hair.
Now I'm not a professional but I purchased Olaplex on Amazon, now I'm wondering whether I should do a bleach of 30 vol developer (but use 40 since it lowers it) with Olaplex or if I should do a 30 vol bleach bath. My hair has been colored before but right now it's pretty healthy!
My hair is super dark and it's essentially black with a red tint. I'm not going to do my roots since they ended up being lighter than the rest of my hair. Since my hair is so dark I want to do the process that will damage my hair the least! I know it will damage it either way!
Thanks so much for the advice!
J
Ok, step back a second. π can we know some history before anything else. There's a damn good chance you don't need to bleach at all.
What was your hair like before it was dyed this time? Was it previously dyed? Was it all virgin hair? Just some of it virgin? If dyed, when was it last dyed and what colour?

Yes! My hair has not been virgin for a long time. My hair has probably lots color in it but I've done some more natural color removals with vitamin c, and it worked really well for me. It was dyed black with ion semi permanent (with no developer) after a failed try to go red again. It just didn't lift. That was maybe around January and I didn't do much to it since then besides get haircuts until Friday. When I went to the salon (the woman is a family friend) she put the dye on my hair and it didn't lift anything but my roots. While I was in the chair she said my hair was particularly heathy and strong! I've been babying it for a while just so I could get it strong again! But my hair is super super dark and I'm trying to get it like in the oh the below. A few years ago i did successfully go that color but two months prior to that they did a bleach bath so it was significantly lighter than it is now. I would say my hair is a level 2 with more of a reddish tint than usual.
Yeah, that's the problem. You really should try and remove as much dye as possible before trying one of the high lift dyes. They just aren't made to lift colour, only lift natural hair colour and add the red. Occasionally, people will be lucky and it'll lift dye, but it's just that, luck.
The fact it's been dyed black is also a huge red flag, even if it was a semi. They can stain really badly. You need to try and remove as much colour as possible before trying again and NOT with bleach. Bleach also isn't designed to remove dye, only natural colour. Again, sometimes you'll get lift, but again, it's luck. It's believed it can make things even worse by driving the colour in deeper making it even harder to remove.
So, try a colour remover and see what that does. Then we can assess the situation at that point. You can use them up to three times.
Also, hair can feel amazing but that doesn't mean it's not damaged. It can take several weeks for damage to show up fully.

What color remover do you recommend? I want to try to loreal color remover but it's for professionals only
I believe Color Fix is the best one in the US, assuming that's where you are. I'm only guessing by your use of color rather than colour π

Okay! I'll pick that up and try it tonight (I have a college visit in the afternoon) should o do a masque after using it?
It's quite drying, so yes. Something conditioning rather than protein.
