Best way to hide stray grey hairs?

Hello,

This is my first post and i'm looking for some advice please!  I've had the same hairstyle for years now and i'm fed up with it.  I have long, very naturally straight thick hair with a fringe.  My natural colour is dark brown but over the years i've had it highlighted so much that it's light brown with lots of blonde highlights now.  I'm almost 40 and getting lots of dreaded stray grey hairs which are obvious when my highlights are growing out.  I spend ages trying to pull them out with tweezers which is starting to depress me.  Also, after a few months my highlights are looking gold - i noticed it in a photo the other day - i do use silver shampoo but honestly don't think it helps.  My regrowth at the roots is so dark compared to the highlighted hair and it doesn't look very nice.  I don't really have the time or money to be going to the hairdressers all the time for highlights so was wondering....

Should i change the colour back to brown?  My grey hairs will be even more obvious then (the highlights help hide them right now) but if i went to brown, could i dye my roots at home to cover the grey hairs?  It's not growing in grey (yet!), but there are a few here and there.  Should i also go for the chop?  Shoulder length maybe?

I'm just really not sure what to do with my hair but i do fancy a change.  I wear it tied up most of the time so there's not really much point in having it long.  It gets terribly knotted when i wash it too, and the roots are greasy compared to the highlighted part.

I did try red a few years ago which i liked, but it washed out after not very long and left me looking ginger which took ages to go.

I'd appreciate any advice please and sorry it was so long-winded!  *waves*

if you're done with highlights and need a way to cover greys which show next to your natural brown hair first you need to figure out what hair color you want. if you want to go natural you should dye over the non root area. suggest a semi permanent brown that matches your roots closely. i wouldn't do the roots but you could but  then that hair will no longer be virgin. after rinsing out the dye, use Roux hair rinse. I use it to tone my bleached hair and I've read really good things about covering greys. You could get a color to match your hair or lighter like golden blonde or even try red. It will make the greys look highlighted in the tone you chose. It washes right out but a really nice non permanent way to deal with greys.

otherwise, if you want to dye the whole thing go for it. Reds fade the fastest so I would suggest a semi permanent all over, plan to touch up every couple of weeks or get a colored shampoo/conditioner. Aveda has a good one. you could use permanent but maybe start with semi and see how well it covers the grey. without knowing how dark your natural color is i suggest semi.

good luck.
