AVOIDING the roots

Hi! I want to bleach my hair but leave the roots dark.  Have any of you done this before? Any tips on the best way to avoid the roots? I was thinking I could put some sort of barrier on the roots, oil or conditioner maybe? Or use foils? Hmmmm...

And then to leave blonde or to add colour? Yellow maybe?

I'm currently natural bar 2 pieces that are bleached at either side.

Here's some pics I was using as inspo.

Foils are probably the best way since bleach easily eats through oil and conditioner. I did see this look done a different way, with plastic wrap, but this will be impossible to do on your own. I don't have time to try and find the video on youtube but basically plastic wrap was laid on the shoulders, then the bottom most layer of the hair was laid on the plastic. The stylist took the tint brush and painted the bleach on the hair holding the brush so the bristles were vertical instead of horizontal to avoid a harsh line. Another layer of plastic wrap was put over the bleached hair and then another layer of hair was done on top of that until her hair was done. The plastic wrap kept the bleach visible so the color could be watched and kept it moist so it wouldn't stop working.

I would suggest getting somebody else to help you, especially for the back sections. if you do use foils be careful as if they are not done correctly they could bleed out of the top causing a bleed line which is a very blunt line

I have done something similar. I dyed my roots spring green and wanted the tips lilac so i dyed the roots first then covered them with foil before doing the lilac.

I'm planning on leaving my roots natural so at least that part is easy! How about just taking a dip dye/ombré technique but higher up? How would that look?

This is what I'd suggest.

My hair was just not taking up the bleach very well...
The majority was virgin and the small amount that isn't is already bleached v. light so I avoided it. I need to take it higher as well but thought I would give it a week or so.

Hi, theres something here about using backcombing to avoid a straight line: http://intothegloss.com/2014/04/bleach-hair-at-home-how-to/

The people in the comments section explain it a little better. Hope this helps, I'm a newb to all this myself, so hopefully someone here can say if it's ok or not.

Thanks bombadil! I will try this method. It is getting lighter, I am happy to do it gradually but I do worry about getting it to the same place every time...
