Hey guys π I'm aiming to go a light blonde (second attempt) but just wanted some advice on a few things. Here's some history first, sorry if this is a long one!
Around six months ago I decided I wanted to go blonde. My hair is naturally a dark brown and had been dyed with various dark golden brown permanent box dyes in the past. The first thing I did was use a colour remover which took me to a dark gingery colour. After 2 30vol bleaches (a month apart) and messing about with various toners and direct dyes, I got a dark, golden blonde. After a while I decided to dye the top portion of my hair with a permanent golden brown and blend it into an ombre effect. So this time my plan is to use a colour remover first again to remove the brown at the top, three times for full effect. Then I'll start to lighten after waiting a week (using the coconut oil technique this time).
My main question is what colour will the colour remover leave me with? Will it be the dark golden blonde I lightened to before or a ginger colour similar to the first time I used it? And what should be my next steps from there? Is there any particular bleach anyone would recommend, and what are the best blue/violet shades to buy to make toner?
Sorry for how long this was, any help will be appreciated! π
It's almost impossible to say exactly what you will end up with after using the remover. In theory as long as your hair cuticle is not stained it should be somewhere in the gold to yellow range. After using the color remover, be sure to check that all the color is washed out by applying developer to a strand of hair. If the color darkens, there are still color pigments in your hair and you need to keep washing/ rinsing it out. If you need to, you can use color removers up to three times. Make sure you use a good deep conditioner with them since they will dry your hair out. Once you have removed all the color you can bleach. Recommended bleaches include Matrix Light Master and Wella Blondor. Any peroxide developer is fine but don't purchase it until you know what level of lift you will need. I personally like Manic Panic Ultra Violet as a violet toner as it is easy for me to obtain, but someone else might have a better suggestion.
Okay that's great π Since it was blonde, I have used one permanent brown dye and a few directs dyes so hopefully there's no staining. I've used the colour remover before and got a great result with it so it should be fine this time too. I've bought 3 boxes already just incase I need them.
I'm a little worried about the bleaching as my lengths may lift to a gold colour with the colour remover, but my roots will be darker - should I bleach them separately?
Thanks for the bleach and toner suggestions! I'll have a look and see what's easiest for me to get. Thanks!
Your roots are likely to go lighter due to the heat from your head. To be certain of your timing do a strand test and keep a note.
I like Directions Violet and Neon Blue for toning, (diluted obviously) depending on what colour you are wanting. Neon Blue is very purple, and gives a silver tone on palest blonde hair
Yeah that sounds like a good idea, I will definitely do a strand test before anything else! If the roots dont lighten as much as I would like them too I think I'll use a cool-toned dark blonde direct dye on them and keep the ombre effect going until I can lighten again. Should I be using different a different strength of developer on my roots and lengths if they are different shades? Or just adjust the times?
Thanks for the advice on Neon Blue! I had been looking at directions but I didn't realise that one was purple based. I'm hoping for a silvery blonde at some point but it might take a while!
