Hey there everyone!
This is my very first post, I tried to search as best as I could for a post similar to my situation, but couldn't find much, so I decided I better ask myself π I hope you can give me some advice, and I'm sorry if it is in the wrong place or a repeated question!
So, around a year ago, I did an ombre in a salon. You can pretty much see how it turned out in my picture :p
Needless to say I got tired of the ombre after like two seconds and dyed over it with my trusty red-copper dye. Now I'm stuck with really dark copper hair (looks great when it is dyed, but after two washed it is just brown with slightly lighter ends -.-). So, definitely not happy!
My idea was to do a bleach bath, since I know that my hair will go ginger/orange (as it did in the salon), to even it out and make it lighter (just a bit).
I definitely want the lighter copper in my hair, but I'm struggling on how to do my bleach bath, since I now have virgin roots, then dark copper dyed hair, then bleached light copper ends... Do I just apply it all over or do I start by the roots or by the ends? I'm really puzzled, because I want to kinda even it out, so I'm afraid of putting the bleach bath on the parts that were already bleached and ending up with white ends! π
I'd then wait a couple of days and the dye it with a light copper color to make it even and nice π
Any help is appreciated, and sorry for the long description, it is kind of a weird situation!
(I attached a picture of what I am aiming for and another one of what my hair looks like at the moment π )
I think your first step would be at least one round of colour remover to get rid of the dye. This will reveal your base colour(s). You can use colour removers three times which might be a good idea if you've been dying your hair repeatedly.
If the copper dye was a box dye, it probably had peroxide so may have lightened your hair.
Never go straight to bleaching if you have dye in your hair.
You want to use a colour remover such as decolour remover or colour b4. These are non damaging and designed to remove permanent dye molecules from your hair. You can use them up to three times before they have done all they're going to do. That should bring your hair back to the base colour underneath, which will be lighter and warmer than your natural colour.
You might find that at this point you have an even enough base to dye the colour you want over it. If not then you can bleach bathe your roots and mid lengths, avoiding the ends of your hair. You need to wait a week between using a colour remover and bleaching. Applying coconut oil a few hours before bleaching will help protect your hair from some of the damage.
I would recommend using a semi permanent colour like one of the adore copper shades as your hair is already processed and they will likely give better results. Also they don't have a brown base like permanent dyes so they won't fade to brown.
Alright, thanks! I will do the color remover and I will see how it comes out π And I will try the semi-permanent dyes, as you suggested. Anyone has any idea of what would be the color of the picture? I was thinking maybe the adore french cognac may be the closest.. How light would my base need to be? I would guess a medium to light ginger?
Come to think of it, I probably do have a lot of color buildup in my hair, I have been dying it for years! I never knew about color removers before I came across this forum (thanks for that!), I guess I assumed that because I would be going pretty much the same color group, the bleach bath would be better.. but yeah, if I do the color remover, it pretty much solves the whole problem. Thank you, so so much! π
I think French cognac may be a little more yellow and less orange than your picture. I would go for that with a little of one of their more orange shades mixed in. (Depending on your base obviously).
You should only need a medium ginger base for a shade like that. Which you will probably have underneath your permanent dye.
And you're welcome π
If you bleach bath without using a colour remover, your natural hair at the roots will lift much quicker than the dyed areas and you will get banding.

Okay, I will do the color b4 and then I will see what combination may be best π I'll make sure to show it off over here!

Yes, that was exactly what I was afraid of! That's why I asked you lovely ladies for your wisdom *thx*
Hey everyone!
Just thought I'd update you on how the color b4 turned out π
The color is quite uneven, it is a quite bright honey color on top, medium brown underneath and dark brown (virgin) roots.
I think it calls for a bleach bath, don't you think? I'll start with the roots, then the back of my head and then the rest (after a couple of minutes, i think), and I won't leave it for long.. Just want a more even color.
Also, I ended up going for a more fiery orange-based red! I wanted SFX Hot Lava, but it is sold out everywhere! I ordered it from US, but it will take a while to get here (I live in Czech Republic), so I went to a local store and bought myself some Manic Panic! I'll mix Wildfire and Rock 'n Roll Red, and we will see how it turns out!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go wash my hair again (getting rid of the colour b4) and then do a coconut oil mask for the rest of the day, and I'll probably bleach bath in the evening π
How many rounds of colour remover have you done? If it was just the one, personally I try another just to see if anymore colour will budge. Also, I'd personally leave it about a week before bleach bathing if you have not long done a colour remover & give your hair a good wash a couple times in that week, as if it hasn't been all washed out throughly when you bleach bath it could end up making your hair darker again I believe.

I did only one round, actually. I'd be tempted to do another one if I hadn't gotten slightly poisoned by the fumes yesterday.. The smell was really intense and it made me sick, so I think I'll skip the second round. Besides, I doubt my hair is any lighter that what I can see now (I only dyed it three times with permanent hair dye, with 20vol).
I'd like to wait another couple of days, yes, but I have an event on Monday, and I cannot really go to work and to the event with brassy ginger/orange/brown hair! π
Thanks for pointing out the re-oxidizing problem, I'll take another shower (that makes three), sleep with some coconut oil in my hair and tomorrow I'll do just my roots (which are almost black anyway, so should't be much of a risk). The underneath part of my hair is about one or two shades darker, so it shouldn't be too noticeable...
Thanks a lot for the advice! π
