hi guys. i need some second opinions here because i am getting a little hysterical over my hair.
so i got to a light golden blonde a while ago, after having every color under the sun basically. it took me a long time to get this blonde, mostly growing out a bad bleach/box dye job. it was finally at a blonde that i was really happy with, but because i wasn't bleaching it my roots were consistently darker than the bottom. i'm a natural dark dirty blonde so it didn't bother me too much, but now and again i would top off my color with some permanent blonde dye and toner.
i don't know what i did wrong this time (i suspect i left the hair dye in way too long for my damaged porous hair?) but regardless, i have turned my golden blonde hair BROWN. the top is basically auburn in the right light. i bought colorfix and did it twice with shampoo, once normally (although i didn't leave it on for twenty minutes as i was worried that it would go super super red and i had to go to work).
my question is, how should i go about getting my blonde back? is bleach the only way? i can't leave my hair like this, i'm so upset and i can't believe that it took me this long to get to this color and i ruined it in half an hour!! thanks in advance for any advice, you guys are life savers.
What exactly did you use and did you put it all over your hair?
I would imagine the porous lengths took on too much of the colour due to them being porous from being processed too much.
You should be able to get it out with colour remover which can be used up to 3 times (though you need to use it properly and make sure you rinse it for even longer than it says) and you may just find that it fades out anyway over time.
If the top part of your hair is affected you might find that has some unwanted warm tones even after you remove the colour as all permanent colour lifts hair slightly.
It's really not ideal to use permanent dyes or toners that have to be mixed with peroxide over hair that has already been bleached as the more porous it gets the more patchy and unreliable the colour will get. Better to use purple shampoo or a drop of violet dye in some white conditioner to tone and only colour your roots as they come through if necessary.
Thanks for your reply! I used an ion color which I used a few months ago without a problem and a 20 vol developer. It was a slightly different shade which may have been the issue (I've used one of the lightest shades the last time I did this). I put it on longer on the roots and less time on the length but yes all over! I had thought my bleached hair had mostly grown out but clearly it's still hanging out and causing issues.
I'm giving my hair the week off and then going back in with the color remover, you're right in that I need to leave in on for the longest amount of time suggested I think. Thanks for the tip about the conditioner, I'll do that next time instead of anything needing developer. If the roots come out warm do you think the purple will work on them?
It depends on what unwanted tones you have in the roots, you'd need blue to counteract orange and purple to counteract gold and yellow. You might find it fades on the lengths anyway if your hair is quite porous, I find washing with very warm water and dandruff shampoo fades even permanent dyes fairly well.
