Hiya, slight problem ....... I've got bleach powder with 20vol developer on my head but I'm not going to last long cos it's fricking burning!!
Why is 20vol burning me?

Okaaaay so now that I've put out the fire I can calm down and think this through.
Normally when I bleach (tbh not something I do often) I leave my hair & scalp unwashed for about a week, saturate with coconut oil to soak overnight, than apply a little more if I feel the need before I start setting up my "bleaching station".
Tonight I had coconut oil on my head for about an hour before bleaching. Not sure when I last used shampoo but my head has at least been under the shower in the last few few days.
So that might be a factor!!
My products are a bit old as well, I don't know that has a burny effect?
When will I learn that the "ah f**k it" approach causes nothing but disaster?! *boo*
Seriously though, 20 vol hurting like that? Is that normal?
I thought 20 vol was "gentle" at least compared to the probably-40-vol kit I used before, that time it only hurt in a couple of spots like behind my ear.
One other thing; when I mixed the powder & developer together it just kept getting thicker, it ended up an almost crumbly paste that wouldn't spread, I had to quickly mix more and slap it on, and sort of work it in ..... oh. Right.
My hair is still wet, I'm going to go and slather on some conditioner and have a cup of tea. It looks very orange but I'll properly assess the colour in the morning. I'd rather have orange hair than 3rd degree burns anyway.

It could be a zillion things. It could be how warm your room was, how your skin is at the moment, if you accidentally rubbed your scalp a little more than usual when applying.
It drying out could be that you didn't mix in as much developer as normal (even measuring everything you can end up doing this), it being a bit warmer than normal, it could be because it's old, but how old is it?
Without seeing everything you did and all the conditions and even things we can't possibly see it's impossible to say what caused it. Again, how old are your products? How much is left? If there's only a bit left or they're really, really old then replace them.
I had someone use 20 vol on me a while ago, he mashed it into my head a bit, I had a lot of burning and scabs on my head afterwards, so it can happen easily

The room was comfortably cool, my skin is ok but tends to dryness, I definitely rubbed it more than usual because it was getting really hard to spread so I was sort of working it in :-[ woops. I've got some tiny scabs today so I've just slathered my head in aloe vera gel 😛
I'm trying to think how old my bleach (matrix light master?) is ..... I'm not sure exactly but it's older than my 20-month-old son so probably 2 years or so. There's at least half the packet left though. The developer is just a cheapie, truzone I think.
Time to replace?
Shockingly enough, although my hair is not as light as I wanted it, it's more even than I would have expected. Couple of weeks of scalp recovery and a bleach bath oughta do it.

Yeah, rubbing it into the scalp is almost certainly what did it.
2 years is getting a bit old, so yeah, I would replace it. It's probably ok, but it will have degraded a certain amount.
